Finding a man she truly can love for the first time in her life, she leaves her demi-monde life and goes to live with Alfredo in the countryside.
There she is visited by Alfredo´s father Giorgio Germont, who has come to ask her to give up Alfredo; his daughter´s engagement is threatened by the scandal of the association. She agrees to make the sacrifice and returns to her former protector, Baron Douphol.
Alfredo publicly insults Violetta at a party given by Flora Bervoix; he is challenged to a duel by the Baron and is also disowned by his father.
He eventually learns the truth about Violetta´s sacrifice and returns to find her dying.
