Maria Kontra – mezzosopran

Danish mezzo-soprano Maria Kontra studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Music graduating in 2003. Same year she was awarded a full scholarship for the Opera Course at Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating in 2005.

Maria has performed a wide-ranging repertoire in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Germany and Great Britain; this includes songs by Kurt Weill, Wolfs Mörike Lieder, songs by French/American composer Loeffler, Ligeti, Berlioz, Chausson, Mahler and Schuberts Winterreise, but also an extensive repertoire of early music by composers such as Barbara Strozzi, Vivaldi, Hasse, Tunder, Dowland, Ristori, Bach, Buxtehude, Purcell and Händel.

Opera roles include: Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Aarhus Sommeropera 2012, Isabella in the world premiere of Danish composer Bo Gunges opera Orkestergraven Fynske Opera 2012, Flora in La Traviata, Opera Hedeland 2011 Carmen, Operakompagniet 2010, Orfeo Glucks Orfeo ed Euridice, Copenhagen Opera Festival 2009, Messagiera/Speranza Monteverdi: LOrfeo, Opera at Valdemar Castle 2008; Venere (Monteverdi: Poppea), Operaen, Copenhagen 2008; Mezzo-soloist in Baroque Collage (Handel: Scenes from Giulio Cesare, Orlando, Rinaldo and Xerxes), Fynske Opera 2007; Annio Clemenza di Tito Concert-performance Tivolis Concert Hall 2006.

In addition to this Maria has performed with Sønderborg Symphony Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, The Danish Radio Sinfonietta, Athelas Sinfonietta, Saraband Consort, Hurra Barock, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen and Ensemble Zimmerman.
