Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87) fick genom kungligt privilegium kontroll över all musikdramatik i Frankrike.

Komiska inslag saknades.

Fransk uvertyr: långsam-snabb-långsam

Recitativ, arioso, airs (korta arior) går i varandra

Utarbetade balettinslag, divertissements och storslagen scenteknik.

Stor variation i orkesterbehandling

  • Franska romantiker: Gounod, Léo Delibes, Massenet, Ambroise Thomas
  • Fransk realism: Bizet, Massenet

I atonal musik undviker man sådana styrande strukturer.

Degenerate music (German: Entartete Musik, German pronunciation: [ɛntaʁtɛtə muziːk]) was a label applied in the 1930s by the Nazi government in Germany to certain forms of music that it considered to be harmful or decadent. The Nazi government’s concern for degenerate music was a part of its larger and more well-known campaign againstdegenerate art (‘Entartete Kunst’). In both cases, the government attempted to isolate, discredit, discourage, or ban the works. Their ideas drew on decades of anti-Semitic writing on music and on a debate on the relationship between music and mental illness.

Racist emphasis

The Nazi regime promoted the works of German composers, especially those of Richard Wagner who was also much admired by Adolf Hitler as well as many others. Special favourites were Rienzi and the Ring cycle with all its links to German mythology. Military marches were highly approved,[clarification needed] and widely used as in the films of Leni Riefenstahl such as Triumph of the Will.[citation needed] Jewish composers such as Felix Mendelssohn and Gustav Mahler were disparaged and condemned by the Nazis. In Leipzig, a bronze statue of Mendelssohn was removed. The regime commissioned music to replace his incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Petit and Giner 2015,[page needed]). In addition, many other black performers and Jazz musicians were discredited and had their reputations destroyed, often Jazz musicians were called “Schwarzer” or “Gaëtano”, the first meaning black and the second meaning gypsy.[citation needed]

Discrimination

From the Nazi seizure of power onward, these composers found it increasingly difficult, and often impossible, to get work or have their music performed. Many went into exile (e.g., Arnold Schoenberg, Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, Berthold Goldschmidt); or retreated into ‘internal exile’ (e.g., Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Boris Blacher); or ended up in the concentration camps (e.g., Viktor Ullmann, or Erwin Schulhoff).

Like degenerate art, examples of degenerate music were displayed in public exhibits in Germany beginning in 1938. One of the first of these was organized in Düsseldorf byHans Severus Ziegler, at the time superintendent of the Weimar National Theatre, who explained in an opening speech that the decay of music was “due to the influence of Judaism and capitalism”. Ziegler’s exhibit was organized into seven sections, devoted to (1) the influence of Judaism, (2) Schoenberg, (3) Kurt Weill and Ernst Krenek, (4) “Minor Bolsheviks” (Schreker, Alban Berg, Ernst Toch, etc.), (5) Leo Kestenberg, director of musical education before 1933, (6) Hindemith’s operas and oratorios, and (7) Igor Stravinsky (Anon. 1938, 629).

From the mid-1990s the Decca Record Company released a series of recordings under the title ‘Entartete Musik: Music Suppressed by the Third Reich’, covering lesser-known works by several of the above-named composers.

Almost every European city and society aspired to have its own opera house, and dozens of new theaters were constructed in the course of the “long” nineteenth century. At the time of the French Revolution in 1789, only a few, mostly royal, opera theaters, existed in Europe. However, by the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries nearly every large town possessed a theater in which operas were performed, especially in Central Europe. The first German opera was Dafne, composed by Heinrich Schütz in 1627, but the music score has not survived. Italian opera held a great sway over German-speaking countries until the late 18th century. Nevertheless, native forms would develop in spite of this influence. In 1644, Sigmund Staden produced the first Singspiel, Seelewig, a popular form of German-language opera in which singing alternates with spoken dialogue. In the late 17th century and early 18th century, the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg presented German operas by Keiser, Telemann and Handel. Yet most of the major German composers of the time, including Handel himself, as well as Graun, Hasse and later Gluck, choose to compose most of their operas in foreign languages, especially Italian. In contrast to Italian opera, which was generally composed for the aristocratic class, German opera was generally composed for the masses and tended to feature simple folk-like melodies, and it was not until the arrival of Mozart that German opera was able to match its Italian counterpart in musical sophistication. Today the most renowned figure of late 18th century opera is Mozart, who began with opera seria but is most famous for his Italian comic operas, especially The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze Di Figaro), Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, as well as The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), a landmark in the German tradition … Mozart’s Singspiele, Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782) and Die Zauberflöte (1791) were an important breakthrough in achieving international recognition for German opera. The tradition was developed in the 19th century by Beethoven with his Fidelio, inspired by the climate of the French Revolution. Carl Maria von Weber established German Romantic opera in opposition to the dominance of Italian bel canto. His Der Freischütz (1821) shows his genius for creating a supernatural atmosphere … … Other opera composers of the time include Marschner, Schubert and Lortzing, but the most significant figure was undoubtedly Wagner. Wagner was one of the most revolutionary and controversial composers in musical history. Starting under the influence of Weber and Meyerbeer, he gradually evolved a new concept of opera as a Gesamtkunstwerk (a “complete work of art”), a fusion of music, poetry and painting. He greatly increased the role and power of the orchestra, creating scores with a complex web of leitmotifs, recurring themes often associated with the characters and concepts of the drama, of which prototypes can be heard in his earlier operas such as Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin; and he was prepared to violate accepted musical conventions, such as tonality, in his quest for greater expressivity. In his mature music dramas, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal, he abolished the distinction between aria and recitative in favour of a seamless flow of “endless melody”. Wagner also brought a new philosophical dimension to opera in his works, which were usually based on stories from Germanic or Arthurian legend. Finally, Wagner built his own opera house at Bayreuth with part of the patronage from Ludwig II of Bavaria, exclusively dedicated to performing his own works in the style he wanted. …Framtid

Opera and the future of Europe

Opera and the future of Europe by Bernard Foccroulle
At Opera Europa’s spring conference in Vienna, José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, addressed European opera directors thus: ‘Over the centuries opera has been a cement that bound Europe together; today Europe needs artists and intellectuals to help us write a new page of its ‘history’. This begs several questions: How to identify the great lines of a common project that will develop over the next decades? What will art, and in particular opera, contribute?
Nowadays festival and opera directors are preoccupied with the consequences of a crisis the scope of which is probably deeper than we want to acknowledge. In addition to the difficult economic climate, they have to deal with the rapid degradation of the environment, social tensions and wars, as well as a growing difficulty to master everything at once. Should we still think of the ‘crisis’ as one that could possibly resolve and subsequently return us to a state comparable to what we have known before? Or should we not rather think of it as a period of profound mutation that demands we take risks and grab the opportunities it throws at us.

Historik

Opera in the Dutch-language is a minor tradition in the opera history of the Netherlands. Since the earliest operas were staged in the Netherlands in the 17th Century the preference has always been for original Italian, French and German versions, or occasionally French translations of Italian and German works. The 1680s saw the first pastoral semi-operas in Dutch, De triomfeerende Min (1678) and Bacchus, Ceres en Venus (1686). The 18th century saw development of the zangspel (singspiel), such as Zemire en Azor (1784), but these failed to establish a vernacular opera tradition.[1] With a few notable exceptions – such as the 1834 Dutch-language opera Saffo by Johannes Bernardus van Bree to a libretto by Jacob van Lennep (1802–1868), the 19th century saw no major Dutch-language operas. While there continued to be a tradition of art song and choral compositions in Dutch, in the 20th and 21st century original Dutch language opera compositions were to remain rare, and such as in the case of Willem Pijper’s Halewijn (1932–34, after the tale of Heer Halewijn) not always well received. Dutch-language translations of Italian standards were produced from 1886 by the Dutch Opera Company of Johannes George de Groot starting a minor strand in opera performance which persisted, with closures and openings of various opera companies, until World War I, and again in the inter-war years. A revived attempt to produce operas sung in Dutch was made by De Nederlandse Opera in the years following World War II.

Operahuset i Amsterdam

Dutch National Opera, DNO (formerly De Nederlandse Opera, now De Nationale Opera in Dutch) is a Dutch opera company based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Its present home base is the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, a modern building designed by Cees Dam and Wilhelm Holzbauer which opened in 1986. DNO was established shortly after the end of World War II as a repertory company with a permanent ensemble. In the postwar period, it toured extensively in the Netherlands. In 1986, the company moved to the new Stopera building, which it shares with the Dutch National Ballet, and thereafter became known as De Nederlandse Opera (DNO). In 2014 its name was changed to Dutch National Opera.[1] For many years, the June production has been organized as part of the Holland Festival and includes the participation of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. DNO has lent its productions to foreign companies, such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Lincoln Center Festival in New York, as well as the Adelaide Festival in Australia.

Prinsengracht Concert in Amsterdam
This open air classical music concert has a long tradition; it used to be called The Pulitzer Concert, because it is staged on pontoons floating on water just in front of the Pulitzer Hotel. Many spectators of Prinsengracht Concert arrive on boats, while scores of of them are sitting and standing on the canal’s banks. The music sounds marvelous in these open, full of water surroundings. The most attractive is late evening, when the stage and its surroundings are illuminated by strong reflectors, creating a truly unique atmosphere. While listening to the concert is free, if you intend to get there on a boat, you are going to have a special pass to get close to the stage. Also a limited number of ticketed seats are built around the podium.

Barok Opera Amsterdam

Barok Opera Amsterdam

Barokopera Amsterdam shapes its performances based on its own personal point of view regarding authentic musical theater. The productions, uniting early music from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries with contemporary theater, aim for a broad audience of theater and music-lovers.
Barokopera Amsterdam’s musicians play on original instruments or copies thereof and are all members of renowned baroque and romantic period ensembles. Young soloists and musicians, graduates of conservatories from around the world, are given the opportunity to perform under the protective wings of experienced colleagues, conductor, and director.
The productions of Barokopera Amsterdam take their inspiration from the Early Music performance practice. A thorough study of music and theater science from the period of each of the works guarantees a responsible contemporary interpretation.
The result is modern musical theater productions, such as the successful tour of the Netherlands’ theaters with the Purcell Gala. Youtube

Since 1989 the foundation known as Spanga, the Verona of Weststellingwerf (OPERA SPANGA) has been producing its own unique brand of opera in the Frisian hamlet of Spanga. It is committed to the goal of invigorating the art of opera and taking it off the pedestal it occupies in culture land and putting it where it belongs – in peoples’ hearts. Corina van Eijk, the artistic director, along with the conductor and her permanent team of designers, makes thorough preparations since she believes that a work can only be interpreted after it has been studied and understood down to the minutest detail. These time-consuming preparations, along with the extended rehearsal period with singers who consider good acting to be just as important as good singing, have borne their fruit. The process has led to performances with a warm beating heart.

WikipediaYoutube

The Council for Culture is the legal adviser of the government in the fields of the arts, culture and media. The Council provides recommendations regarding the cultural policy in the Netherlands, whether it is requested of them or not. Usually, the Council provides a recommendation at the request of the Minister of the OCW (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science). Every four years, the Council presents its recommendations on the perennial, government-subsidised, cultural institutions. The recommendation is not binding; the Minister has the final decision about which institutes are eligible for subsidy.

The Performing Arts Fund NL is the most important culture fund for music, music theatre, dance and theatre in the Netherlands and provides support on behalf of the government to every form of the professional performing arts. To be able to apply for a grant at the Performing Arts Fund, the applying person or organisation must be residing in the Netherlands, with the exception of applications for the grant for composition or libretto commission and for presentations of Dutch performing arts abroad at the invitation of prominent international festivals and venues.

Opera Fuels Belgian Revolution
On the evening of 25 August 1830, the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels—now the capital of Belgium, but then just a city in the south of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands—hosted a very special performance of Daniel Auber’s opera La Muette de Portici (The Mute Girl of Portici) to honour the birthday of King William I.
This nationalistic tale had resonated powerfully with the rebels of the July Revolution in France that summer, and it also lit a patriotic fire in the hearts of its audience in the Netherlands. As Richard Wagner wrote in his 1871 book Reminiscences of Auber, “The opera was recognised as an obvious precursor of the July Revolution, and seldom has an artistic product stood in closer connection to a world event.”
As soon as the show was over, the excited audience poured out into the streets and started occupying government buildings as well as destroying factories. In the days afterwards they designed a flag for Belgian independence—they even attached it to their standard with their shoelaces and used it to lead a charge against William I’s royal army—and attracted a lot of support from Brussels’ downtrodden underclass. In September, the city fell into bloody street battles between the military and the rebels, who were eventually victorious. They drafted a Declaration of Independence on 4 October, and on 20 December the London Conference declared that the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was dissolved. Soon afterwards it confirmed that Belgium was now an independent country.
Belgium as a country may have been created in 1830, but it is not reasonable to take the view that cultural life did not begin until then, any more than it is possible to isolate the Belgian federal State, let alone each of its three constituent Communities (French, Flemish and German-speaking), from the rest of the world.
For example, Belgium’s great emblematic cultural institutions (such as the Museums of Fine Arts, Art and History and the Opera) predate the creation of the Belgian State. These institutions proliferated and developed through the 19th and 20th centuries, and remained under the umbrella of the federal State when responsibilities were divided between the federal State and the federated bodies in 1970.

Theatre Royal La Monnaie

Theatre Royal La Monnaie

1695: Gio Paolo Bombarda, owner of the theatre at the Hooikaai, banker and financial counsellor to Maximilian II Emmanuel of Bavaria and governor of the Spanish Netherlands, decided to build a public theatre for opera, theatre and ballet performances.
1700: This theatre was built by the architects Paolo and Pietro Bezzi on the site of the former ‘Herberge van Oistervant’ mint (‘La Monnaie’ is the French word for ‘coins’). It was considered one of the most beautiful theatres outside Italy.
1800: Napoleon decided to build a new theatre.
1819: Inauguration of the new theatre designed by the French architect Louis Damesme.
1830: King William of the Spanish Netherlands lifted the prohibition on the staging of Auber’s opera The Mute of Portici. This work played an important part in Belgium’s struggle for independence.
1853: Repertoire restricted to opera and dance.
1855: The interior of the theatre was destroyed by fire. Only the pediment (Eugene Simonis ‘Harmony of Human Passions’), the colonnade and the outside walls were left intact.
1856: Inauguration of the third theatre by architect Joseph Poelaert.
1876: Gédéon Bordiau added an extra floor and installed the building’s first sophisticated air-conditioning system.
1963: ‘La Monnaie’ became a national institution, having first been run as a private concession and then by the City of Brussels.
1985: The Department of Public Works decided to renovate the building for technical, safety and aesthetic reasons.
1986: Inauguration of the restored building.
1998: To mark the 300th anniversary of La Monnaie, the stage organ was restored and the restored paintings on canvas were reinstalled on the cupola of the auditorium.
2000: Inauguration of the New Monnaie workshops in the ancient Vanderborght buildings and the neo-classical building at no. 23 Leopoldstraat just behind La Monnaie. An exhibition entitled «Opera. Tangible Emotion» was mounted in the renovated buildings. Youtube

Opera Vlaanderen, Antverpen

The Vlaamse Opera (Flemish Opera) is an opera company in Belgium directed by Aviel Cahn which operates in two different opera houses in two Flemish cities, the Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen and the Vlaamse Opera Ghent. However, the company shares one orchestra, choir, technical team, etc. The organization is mainly financed by the Flemish government and the city councils of Antwerp and Ghent. In its current form, the company was created in 1996 as a successor to the Flemish Opera Foundation (Vlaamse Opera Stichting, which had existed since 1988), and the Opera for Flanders (Opera voor Vlaanderen, which had existed since 1981). Both former institutions were similar fusions between the former opera houses of Antwerp and Ghent. Since the fusion in 1981, the company has been giving performances in two different historic theatres. The first public opera performances in Antwerp date back to 1661. Performances took place on the stage of the Schouwburgh van de Oude Voetboog (Theatre of the Guild of Crossbowmen) at the Grote Markt. The theatre gradually lost its popular Flemish character as French artists were engaged and the performances were no longer performed in the local (Dutch) language, but in French, the adopted language of the Flemish elite. The new theatre opened after the Belgian revolution in 1834. (This building is now known as the Bourlaschouwburg and is used today for regular theatre performances.) The French repertoire (and, to a lesser extent, the Italian repertoire in French translation) continued to dominate. Wikipedia In EnglishYoutube

We extended the idea to a public of children for whom we create an opera adaptation suitable for their age and translated into Dutch. The other topics of our mission statement involve the offering of a platform to young artists who can at the same time benefit from the experience of the team and the valorization of the cultural heritage of the Landcommandery Alden Biesen. We create, stimulate and present contemporary music theatre that surprises, sparks the imagination, moves and puts one in a pensive mood. We explore the musical power of theatre and the theatrical power of music. Our repertoire is surprisingly varied, and the language we are developing has many layers. Driven by a great curiosity regarding the unknown, and thus constantly ‘learning and discovering’, on the one hand we build bridges between various artistic and non-artistic worlds and practices, and on the other between different generations and audience groups. We also extend this beyond the national boundaries. Our integrated operations are a reflection of the society we dream of: generous, sustainable, in constant motion and not afraid of contrasts and extremes.
WALPURGIS was founded in 1987 and since 1993 has received operational subsidies from the Flemish Authorities.
At the end of September the WALPURGIS musical-theatre company will be holding the FENIKS FESTIVAL, international platform for adventurous and experimental music theatre. The festival takes place at deFENIKS, the home base and workplace of the company in Mortsel (Antwerp).

1818: The laying of the first stone of Liège’s seventh theatre, in the presence of the celebrated actress Mademoiselle Mars. The theatre was inaugurated two years later, on 4 November 1820, with Zémire and Azor de Grétry. During the 1789, numerous churches were destroyed – and the Théâtre Royal was built using materials salvaged, notably, from Saint Lambert cathedral and the Chartreux convent (for the columns on the façade). 2009 > 2012: The building underwent a new transformation accompanied by full restoration both inside and out. As a result its magnificent Italian-style auditorium (capacity 1041 seats) rediscovered its former glory and the stage machinery was perfectly adapted to modern techniques, making the theatre one of the most modern in the world. The building also saw an enlargement – upwards – and was equipped with a multifunction room to accommodate both smaller shows and rehearsals or even meetings, conferences, training events, and more. Founded in 1967, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie is, to a large extent, subsidised by the Communauté Française de Belgique (Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles) [French community of Belgium] and the City and Province of Liège. It is one of the three major opera houses in Belgium. Since its origin, the institution has occupied the Théâtre Royal, magnificent building on loan from the City of Liège (inaugurated on 4 November 1820).

In Belgium, cultural policy instruments mostly take the form of subsidies to non-governmental associations, generally set up on a non-profit basis. In fact the main cultural policies are governed by what is known as the principle of subsidiarity. This is based on the principle that the State’s role is not to intervene directly in cultural matters, other than by way of general regulations and subsidies. It leaves the initiative for action with the operators and associations.
While this approach does chime with the international context in which culture develops, where it was important to react to the fascism of the wartime years, in order to establish a distance from the Communist countries (with their State culture) and the United States (where culture is governed by the market and not the State). The Ministry of National Education and Culture (these being responsibilities already covered by two different ministries, one French and one Flemish): mainly, support for artistic creation, professional artists and the big cultural institutions (the General Directorate of Arts and Letters), but also support for cultural dissemination and activities at the emerging local level (General Directorate of Youth and Leisure).

Historik

It is the two conservatories alone that offer the professional track with programs leading to the upper division and the award of the ‘prix de capacité’ after two years of study. These full-time professional courses begin after completion of twelve years of secondary schooling, entry being based on audition and tests of general musicianship. One further level – the ‘interregional division’, the result of agreements with higher level conservatories in neighbouring countries – may then be taken, leading to the ‘premier prix interrégional’ after a further two years of study. Normally, however, students wishing to reach the highest levels of performance are expected to travel to France, Germany or other neighbouring countries.

Lully´s opera Armide

Lully´s opera Armide in Salle du Palais Royal 1761

Opera Bastille i Paris

The Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence is an annual international music festival which takes place each summer in Aix-en-Provence, principally in the month of July. Devoted mainly to opera, it also includes concerts of orchestral, chamber, vocal and solo instrumental music.

Establishment

The first festival took place in July 1948. It was founded by Countess Lily Pastré, who covered the entire costs in 1948. It was made up of three or four concerts in the cour de l’Archevêché, a concert in the Saint-Sauveur cathedral, and six further concerts and recitals in various locations throughout the town. An opera was added to these concerts, Mozart’s Così fan tutte, a work practically unknown by the French public at the time. However, it was not until 1949 that the festival became a success with its production of Don Giovanni.

From inception until 1974, the festival was directed by Gabriel Dussurget who devoted much attention to the artistic and detailed aspects of the productions, which in turn attracted much attention to the festival.

In 1970, Mstislav Rostropovich premiered Henri Dutilleux’s Tout un monde lointain…, now considered as one of the most important additions to the cello repertoire of the 20th century,[5] at the festival.

Under the direction of Bernard Lefort from 1974 to 1982, the Festival became devoted to bel canto opera and, in general, a celebration of the voice. Performances of 19th century operas by Verdi and Donizetti were given by the reigning stars of bel canto such as Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Marilyn Horne, and Katia Ricciarelli, and the Festival spread throughout the town.

From 1982, a broadening of the repertoire to include baroque to modern operas (Britten and Prokofiev, in particular) characterized the era of director Louis Erlo, who gave preference to Mozart by staging new productions of his most famous works, but also the early operas written in the composer’s youth.

In 1998 Stéphane Lissner took over the Festival, accomplishing a complete renovation of the Théâtre de l’Archevêché and thus making it the heart of the Festival. New operas were commissioned, most recently the 2005 production of Julie by the Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans, based on Strindberg’s Miss Julie.

In 2006, it featured concerts and operas as well as master classes. These included Wagner’s Das Rheingold conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with Sir Willard White as Wotan; Mozart’s The Magic Flute, conducted by Daniel Harding; Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers; the Berlin Philharmonic playing Mahler’s 5th Symphony; and Pierre Boulez, conducting and on the piano and works by Henry Purcell.

Performances are given in a variety of locations, including:

  • the Théâtre de l’Archevêché, in the courtyard of the former archibshop’s palace;
  • the Grand Théâtre de Provence, opened in 2007;
  • the Jeu de Paumes, a restored 18th century theatre;
  • the courtyard of the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède;
  • the Théâtre du Grand Saint-Jean, in the grounds of a chateau near Aix.

Aix -les -Bains – Operette

Aix-les-Bains Festival d’Operettes Aix-les-Bains,

Alors oui, notre saison sera pleine d’amour.

23 Jul-3 Aug (2016).

Opéra de Baugé is an opera festival held each summer near the Loire town of Baugé, 40 kilometres east of Angers, France.

From 2003 to 2011 the festival was held in the gardens of Les Capucins (pictured), a private house and former convent. In 2016 the festival returns to Les Capucins after 4 years in a theatre in the centre of the town.

The festival is modelled on England’s Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and performances feature 90-minute intervals during which members of the audience picnic or dine in the attached restaurant. Most of the cast and orchestra are English, and the performances are surtitled in both English and French. In recent years the festival has drawn an audience of 2,500-3,000 to the town, including large numbers who travel from England.

The 2015 season featured performances of Così fan tutte (Mozart), The Bear (Walton) and Façade (Walton). The works presented in 2016 are L’incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi), Albert Herring (Britten) and La Périchole (Offenbach).

The opera is noted for its authentic performances, with a full orchestra and chorus in support of fully staged productions. While the cast remains largely English and French, the festival has increasingly attracted soloists from across Europe and beyond. Singers have gone on to win prizes including the Kathleen Ferrier Award and positions in the Young Artists Programme at Covent Garden.

Bernadette Grimmett has been artistic director of the festival since its inception.

Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, is a theatre in Bordeaux, France, first inaugurated on 17 April 1780. It was in this theatre that the ballet La Fille Mal Gardée premiered in 1789, and where a young Marius Petipa staged some of his first ballets.

History

The theatre was designed by the architect Victor Louis (1731–1800). Louis later designed the galleries surrounding the gardens of the Palais Royal, and the Théâtre Français in Paris.

The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux was conceived as a temple of the Arts and Light, with a neo-classical facade. It has a portico of 12 Corinthian style colossal columns which support an entablature on which stand 12 statues that represent the nine Muses and three goddesses (Juno, Venus and Minerva). Pierre-François Berruer made four of the statues, and his assistant Van den Drix carved the others from Berruer’s models.
In 1871 the theatre was briefly the National Assembly for the French Parliament.

The inside of the theatre was restored in 1991, and once again has its original colours of blue and gold. The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is one of the oldest wooden frame opera houses in Europe not to have burnt or required rebuilding.

Today the theatre is home to the Opéra National de Bordeaux, as well as the Ballet National de Bordeaux which has many international dancers such as Igor Yebra from Spain and Kase Craig from New Zealand.

The initials that characterize it and wich mean « etudes et expressions des modes musicaux » (“studies and expressions of musical modes”) have become an acronym, a guarantee of pluralism and open- mindedness. It is needless to say that for over forty years the Ensemble has been aware of all musical practices.

The Ensemble has premiered more than six hundred pieces. Before any other ensemble, 2e2m introduces composers to the public, and many pieces of its repertoire become major milestones. Although the home town of 2e2m has been Champigny-sur-Marne, the outstanding performances of the Ensemble are acknowledged domestically and overseas. 2e2m not only tackles a whole range of styles – classical, modern and recent – but it also aims at being the main agent of new mixed art forms.

Compiegne Theatre Impérial

Compiegne Theatre Impérial

Théâtre Imperial, 3 rue Othenin, 60200 Compiègne,

Phone:+33 344 40 17 10; Fax:+33 344 40 44 04;

Soyons gourmands !

introduction

Les Musiciens du Louvre (literally The Musicians of the Louvre) is a French period instrument ensemble, formed in 1982. Originally based in Paris, since 1996 it has been based in the Couvent des Minimes in Grenoble. The Guardian considers it one of the best orchestras in the world.

History

Founded by Marc Minkowski in 1982, the ensemble was originally based in Paris. From 1987 it gained an international reputation as one of the best Baroque and classical ensembles. It has also made successful forays into the works of Offenbach, Berlioz and Bizet. In 1992 it inaugurated the Baroque music festival at the Palace of Versailles with Armide by Gluck, then in 1993 took part in the inauguration of the Opéra Nouvel de Lyon with Phaëton by Lully. 1993 also saw it win a Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Vocal Recording for its recording of San Giovanni Battista by Stradella. On its move to Grenoble in 1996 it merged with the Ensemble instrumental de Grenoble.

In 1999, the ensemble collaborated with photographer William Klein on Messiah, a film performance of Handel’s celebrated oratorio with accompanying photographs and filmed images shot or assembled by director.

In 2004, on the reopening of the Maison de la Culture de Grenoble (renamed MC2) Les Musiciens du Louvre set up an ‘atelier de création’. In 2005 they were the first French ensemble invited to play at the Salzburg Festival (Mitridate, reprised in the Mozart complete works festival in 2006). In 2005, Marc Minkowski decided to set up the Atelier des musiciens du louvre, a workshop aiming to increase partnership with regional artists and cultural figures and to increase public access to the orchestra’s concerts via teaching and education projects, especially to the young.

Activities

Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble supports the renewal of Baroque music in France and more generally the use of period instruments and period style. The projet des Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble proposes a progressive and lyrical re-evaluation, from baroque music to modern music, and programming certain works which have been neglected for unjustifiable or obscure reasons. This project makes the ensemble one of the most evolved, inventive and original music groups in the world.

It is also well known for its rediscovery of works by Handel (its contribution to the Handelian repertoire is recognised as one of the most important in the world), Henry Purcell and Jean-Philippe Rameau, as well as by Haydn and Mozart, to mention the most important. This path has naturally led to later and later repertoire, favouring 19th century French music. It has participated in projects around Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique, Nuit d’été, Harold en Italie) and Jacques Offenbach in particular (La Belle Hélène, La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein), but also around Georges Bizet (Carmen and the music from L’Arlésienne) and Gabriel Fauré (Musique de Théâtre). The 2008-2009 season also saw even later composers such as Wagner, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Stravinski.

Opera quickly took a major role in the orchestra’s repertoire right from its foundation – they have won critical acclaim for their productions of Monteverdi ( The Coronation of Poppaea in 2000 at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence), Gluck (Armide in 1992), Mozart (The Magic Flute at the Ruhr Triennale, The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Mitridate in 2005 for their first Salzburg Festival appearance) but above all their productions of Iphigénie en Tauride by Gluck at the Opéra de Paris, Carmen by Bizet (May 2007), Die Feen by Wagner (March 2009) at the Théâtre du Châtelet and The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. It has also toured in Eastern Europe, Asia, North America, South America and (in 2009) to Japan.

Chateau La Coste Pierre Cardin

Phone:+33 4 90 75 93 12;

The Opéra de Lille is a neo-classical opera house, built from 1907 to 1913 and officially inaugurated in 1923. In 1903 fire destroyed the previous Lille opera house, which had been designed by Lille architect Michael Joseph Lequeux and built in 1785. For the replacement city officials chose architect Louis Marie Cordonnier by competition. Cordonnier’s Belle Époque design features an elaborate pediment relief by sculptor Hippolyte Lefèbvre, and two flanking bas-relief panels Alphonse-Amédée Cordonnier and Hector Lemaire. The interior includes work by sculptor Edgar-Henri Boutry. In July 1914, while not quite completed, the Germans occupied the city during World War I and commandeered much of the furniture and equipment of the Opéra to furnish the other opera in Lille, the Theatre Sebastopol. After four years of occupation, the building was restored and opened its doors again in 1923 for a rededication as the Grand Theatre and a “première française”. In 1998 the theatre’s physical condition required an emergency closure, in mid-season. Renovations evolved into a more ambitious project to improve the building’s functional capabilities for the public and for performing artists. This project was complete in time for Lille’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2004.

L’Opéra de Marseille, known today as the Opéra Municipal, is an opera company located in Marseille, France. In 1685, the city was the second in France after Bordeaux to have an opera house which was erected on a tennis court.

However, the first real theatre, the Grand-Théâtre or Salle Bauveau was constructed in 1787. During its period of great opulence following the Revolution, it was the site of many major opera presentations, including Verdi’s Rigoletto and Il Trovatore in 1860 and performances in 1866 of Lucia di Lammermoor and Il Barbiere di Siviglia by the famous soprano, Adelina Patti. Also, French premieres of major operatic works were given in the theatre: these include Aida (1877), La Fanciulla del West (1912), and an historic performance by Dame Nellie Melba in Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet in 1890. Some years following the installation of electricity, in November 1919 a fire destroyed the 18th century theatre, leaving only its shell and an exterior stone colonnade.

The present day opera house, the Opéra Municipal de Marseille, dates from its opening on 4 December 1924. It seats 1,800. It features a classic urn-shaped auditorium, three rings of boxes, two balconies and a gallery. A large sculpted frieze by sculptor Antoine Bourdelle frames the stage.

Designed by the three architects Ebrard, Castel, and Raymond, the theatre preserved the stone colonnade and, located the surviving original box office in the centre of the entrance hall, up from which led two staircases to the elegant main foyer. Beauvert describes it as “an Art Deco temple”, the “soul mate” of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

Many well-known contemporary singers made their French debuts in this opera house. Among them are Alfredo Kraus, Plácido Domingo, and Renata Scotto. The house has a reputation for its very critical audience, especially those members seated in the top gallery, “the gods”. Past music directors of the company have included János Fürst.
After World War II the Marseille opera house staged Sigurd by Ernest Reyer in 1963 and 1995.

The Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole is an 750-seat opera house and theatre located on the Petit-Saulcy island in Metz, capital of the Lorraine region, France. It is the oldest opera house working in France and one of the oldest in Europe. It is also one of the last possessing its own costume ateliers in France.

In 1732, Duke de Belle-Isle, governor of the Three Bishoprics and benefactor of Metz, decided the urban planning of the Petit-Saulcy island (then used to stock firewoods, and occasionally for horse-fairs), in order built in Metz a modern square in a context of the Enlightenment. The island was drained and the embankments and four bridges were built, connecting the medieval town to the island. The edification of the opera house was conducted by Messin architect Jacques Oger. Adjacent to the opera house, the urban planning included also the construction of the Royal Intendant palace by architect Barthélemy Bourdet.

The construction of the opera house extended from 1732 to 1752, the War of the Austrian Succession interrupting the works during 8 years. The Tuscany-influenced neo-Classical building is finally inaugurated with a public ball on February 3, 1752. The duke of Belle-Isle described it as “one of the most beautiful France’s opera-theater” at his time, seating 1,382.

During the French Revolution, the guillotine for the executions was erected on the parvise of the opera house, the Comedy Square. In 1858, local sculptor Charles Pêtre, then member of the School of Metz artistic movement, adorned its facade with allegories of the Tragedy, the Inspiration, the Lyric Poetry, the Comedy, and the Music. The most recent restoration took place between 1981 and 1982 remodeling the interior of the opera house to improve comfort and sightlines. The performance hall had been reduced to 750 seats in 1963.

Opéra national de Lorraine is an opera company and opera house located in the city of Nancy in the French province of Lorraine. Formerly named the Opéra de Nancy et de Lorraine, it was given the status of “national opera” in 2006.

The company’s original theatre was constructed during the reign of the King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, Stanislas Leszczyński in 1758. This theatre, located behind the Museum of Fine Arts, was destroyed by fire in October 1905 and a new opera house was constructed in its present location on the Place Stanislas by Joseph Hornecker and was inaugurated in 1919.

Joseph Hornecker, a member of the “School of Nancy,” created the opera house in the classical style combined with characteristics of “art nouveau”. The work done in Nancy made it a center of art and architecture that rivaled Paris and helped give the city the nickname “Capitale de l’Est.”

The opera house underwent restoration in 1994.

All productions are accompanied by the Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy.

The Opéra de Nice is the principal opera venue in Nice, France.

It offers three types of performances: operas, ballets and classical concerts ; and houses the Ballet Nice Méditerrannée and the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra.

The “petit théâtre en bois” was first created in 1776 by Marquess Alli-Maccarani. Sold in 1787, it reopened in 1790 under the name “Théâtre Royal”.

In 1826, the city of Nice, encouraged by King Charles Félix, bought it from its owners and had it destroyed and rebuilt. It was inaugurated in 1828 with Giovanni Pacini’s Il Barone di Bolsheim.

In 1856, a great ball was organized in the honour of King Victor Emmanuel II.

In 1860, Napoleon III was invited to attend an evening at the Théâtre Royal. For this exceptional occasion, Johann Strauss himself led the orchestra. The same year, the theatre became the “Théâtre Impérial”. In 1864, Napoleon III came back with Tsar Alexander II of Russia. In 1868, Louis II, Duke of Bavaria attended a performance of Cendrillon.

The Théâtre Royal was renamed “Théâtre Municipal” in 1870.

On Wednesday, March 23rd 1881, as the opera Lucia di Lammermoor began, a gas leak started a huge fire. The fire was controlled the next day but there was nothing left of the theatre. Three siblings of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser died in the fire: Lizzie, Kate and James (soprano, contralto and baritone respectively). The city of Nice immediately decided to rebuild another theatre on the same spot. It was imagined by architect François Aune with the approval of Charles Garnier. On February 7th 1885, the Théâtre Municipal re-opened with Verdi’s Aida.

In 1902, it was named Opéra de Nice and is today referred to as Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur.

From 2001 to 2009 the director-general was the Belgian producer Paul-Émile Fourny. He was succeeded by Jacques Hédouin, with a policy of closer working with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, as well as closer collaboration with the two regional orchestras, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and the Orchestre régional de Cannes-Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur.

In November 2012, Marc Adam became the new artistic director of the opera. The same month tenor Jonas Kaufmann performed there.

The Diacosmie is the workshop of the Opéra de Nice, where everything from costumes to sets is created. The building also houses rehearsal rooms for the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ballet Nice Méditerrannée.

The Chorégies d’Orange is a summer opera festival held each August in Orange located about 21 kilometres north of Avignon in southern France. Performances are presented in the ancient Roman theatre, the Théâtre Antique d’Orange, the original stage wall of which has remained intact, creating a semi-circular auditorium which seats 9,000.

A festival began in Orange in 1860 and was held periodically, but it was only after the Roman theatre was restored in 1869 that it became the location of a popular “Roman Festival” which celebrated the glory of Rome and included a performance of Méhul’s opera, Joseph. All the major players of the French classical stage appeared in the Orange festivals, including Sarah Bernhardt who played “Phèdre” in 1903.

In 1902, the festival was given a new name, the “Chorégies”, and it was planned to take place annually. The name comes from the Greek χορηγός khorêgós “choir leader”. Until 1969, the Chorégies consisted of plays, alternating with musical works, opera and symphonies. However, after that date, Orange became solely an opera festival and theatrical works were performed at Avignon.

In 1971, the “New Chorégies” began, with a format not unlike the present one where only about six performances are given during the month-long festival, typically two performances of two operas along with a recital or concert. It quickly became an international success with many major international singers appearing.

Phone:+33 153 05 19 00; Fax:+33 153 05 19 01;

The Cité de la Musique (City of Music), renamed Philharmonie 2 in 2015, is a group of institutions dedicated to music and situated in the Parc de la Villette, 19th arrondissement, Paris, France. It was designed by the architect Christian de Portzamparc and opened in 1995. It consists of an amphitheater, a concert hall that can accommodate an audience of 800–1,000, a music museum containing an important collection of classical music instruments dating mainly from the fifteenth- to twentieth-century, and exhibition halls, workshops and archives. Part of François Mitterrand’s Grands Projets, the Cité de la Musique reinvented La Villette – the former slaughterhouse district.

The Paris Philharmonic (Philharmonie de Paris), a complex formed by a new 2400-seat symphony hall, is a project whose construction had been postponed for about twenty years, to complete the Cité de la Musique.

On 6 March 2006 the French minister of Culture and communication Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, the mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë, and the director of the Cité de la Musique, Laurent Bayle, announced the beginning of the construction at a press conference concerning the reopening of the Salle Pleyel, now associated with the Museum.

The cost of construction was expected to be 170 million euros, and will be shared by the national government (45 per cent), the Ville de Paris (45 per cent), and the Région Île-de-France (10 per cent). But the cost in the end is expected to be €381 million ($505 million)

In April 2007 Jean Nouvel won the design competition for the auditorium. He brought in Brigitte Métra as his partner, along with Marshall Day Acoustics (room acoustics design) and Nagata Acoustics (peer-review and scale model study).

The hall opened on 14 January 2015 with a performance by the Orchestre de Paris of Faure’s Requiem, played to honour the victims of the Charlie Hebdo shootings which took place in the city a week earlier. The opening concert was attended by François Hollande, the President of France.
The first season of the Philharmonie de Paris started in January 2015. The purpose of this season is clearly to reach out to new audiences by providing musical creation and varied repertory in classical music, dance, jazz, world music and contemporary music. On weekends, diverse program of affordably-priced events and activities would be offer structured around a theme(such as the Love Stories weekend in February, David Bowie in early March or Paco de Lucia tribute weekend in May).  The Musée de la Musique features a collection of about 8,350 items, comprising around 4,400 musical instruments, 1,100 instrument elements or 950 pieces of art (paintings, sculptures, etc.) collected by the Conservatoire de Paris since 1793 as well as some archives and a library of 110,000 written and audiovisual documents. The museum’s collection, which opened to the public in 1864 and was relocated at the Cité de la musique in 1997, contains instruments used in classical and popular music from the sixteenth century to the present time including lutes, archlutes, almost 200 classical guitars, violins by Italian luthiers Antonio Stradivari, the Guarneri family, Nicolò Amati; French and Flemish harpsichords; pianos by French piano-makers Erard and Ignaz Pleyel; saxophones by Adolph Sax, etc.

The instruments are exhibited by period and by type. Audio devices are provided at the entrance allowing visitors to hear commentary and excerpts of music played on the instruments.

An ensemble of singers and instrumentalists specialized in the performance of Baroque music on period instruments, Les Arts Florissants are renowned the world over. Founded in 1979 by the Franco-American harpsichordist and conductor William Christie, the Ensemble, named for a short opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, has played a pioneering role in the revival of a Baroque repertoire that had long been neglected (including the rediscovery of countless treasures in the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France). Today that repertoire is widely performed and admired: not only French music from the reign of Louis XIV, but also more generally European music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Ensemble is directed by William Christie who, since 2007, has regularly passed the conductor’s baton over to British tenor Paul Agnew.
Each season Les Arts Florissants give around 100 concerts and opera performances in France—at the Philharmonie de Paris, where they are artists in residence, the Théâtre de Caen, the Opéra Comique, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Château de Versailles, as well as at numerous festivals—and are an active ambassador for French culture abroad, being regularly invited to New York, London, Edinburgh, Brussels, Vienna, Salzburg, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow, and elsewhere.

The French musical ensemble Les Talens Lyriques was created twenty years ago by the harpsichordist and orchestral conductor Christophe Rousset. This instrumental and vocal formation derives its name from the subtitle of one of Rameau’s operas : Les Fêtes d’Hébé (1739).

Les Talens Lyriques thus range from Monteverdi (L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, L’Orfeo), Francesco Cavalli (La Didone, La Calisto) to Haendel (Scipione, Riccardo Primo, Rinaldo, Admeto, Giulio Cesare, Serse, Arianna, Tamerlano, Ariodante, Semele, Alcina), taking in on the way Jean-Baptiste Lully (Persée, Roland, Bellérophon, Phaéton, Amadis, Armide), Henri Desmarest (Vénus et Adonis), Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville (Les Fêtes de Paphos), Cimarosa (Il Mercato di Malmantile, Il Matrimonio segreto), Tommaso Traetta (Antigona, Ippolito ed Aricia), Jommelli (Armida abbandonata), Martin y Soler (La Capricciosa Corretta, Il Tutore burlato), Mozart (Mitridate, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Cosi fan tutte), Salieri (La Grotta di Trofonio, Les Danaïdes), Rameau (Zoroastre, Castor et Pollux, Les Indes galantes, Platée), Gluck (Bauci e Filemone) and Beethoven, and not forgetting Cherubini (Médée), García (Il Califfo di Bagdad), Berlioz, Massenet and Saint-Saëns.

The revival of such scores goes hand in hand with close collaboration with stage directors and choreographers such as Pierre Audi, Jean-Marie Villégier, David McVicar, Eric Vigner, Ludovic Lagarde, Mariame Clément, Jean-Pierre Vincent, Macha Makeïeff, Laura Scozzi, Marcial di Fonzo Bo, Claus Guth, Robert Carsen or David Hermann.

In addition to the lyrical repertoire, the ensemble also explores other musical genres such as the madrigal, the cantata, the Air de cour, the symphony and the vast repertoire of sacred music (masses, motets, oratorios, Leçons de Ténèbres and much else), leading Les Talens Lyriques to perform everywhere in the world with forces varying from a handful of musicians to over sixty from all generations.

In the 2015-2016 season the music of France’s Grand Siècle will have pride of place with the presentation to audiences of Armide, one of Lully’s greatest masterpieces (Beaune, Philharmonie de Paris and Theater an der Wien), along with a programme in a more intimate style, “Musiciens de la chambre du Roi” with Judith van Wanroij, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Noels (Versailles and Gdansk) and the programme devoted to Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray, which will bring together two viola players alongside Christophe Rousset on the harpsichord. Among the season’s other highlights we can point to the revival for Viennese audiences at the Wiener Staatsoper of Gluck’s Alceste (Gluck) in Christof Loy’s staging, a collaborative programme with Ian Bostridge with performances of the great arias of the French and English Baroque (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Opéra de Dijon), two new programmes with Ann Hallenberg (“Farinelli primo uomo assoluto” and “Cantates arcadiennes de Rome à Venise”), plus a tribute to Shakespeare (for the 400th anniversary of his death) with Maria Grazia Schiavo.

The discography of Les Talens Lyriques comprises around forty titles on numerous labels: Erato, Fnac Music, Auvidis, Decca, Naïve, Ambroisie, Virgin Classics and now Aparté. The ensemble is also responsible for the much-acclaimed soundtrack of the film Farinelli (film) (1994).

Since 2007 Les Talens Lyriques have been devoting some of their time to introducing secondary school pupils to the world of music with a programme of workshops and teaching residencies, leading a practical orchestral class and, from 2014, developing new and innovative technological resources designed to help young people discover and appreciate the Baroque repertoire.

Les Talens Lyriques have the support of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the City of Paris. They also enjoy that of the Patrons Circle and the Annenberg Foundation / GRoW – Gregory and Regina Annenberg Weingarten.

Les Talens Lyriques are founding members of FEVIS and PROFEDIM.

An earlier salle Pleyel seating 300 opened in December 1839 at nº 22 rue Rochechouart; it saw the premieres of many important works, including the second (1868) and fifth (1896) piano concertos by Saint-Saëns, and Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte and Jeux d’eau (April 5, 1902) and Sonata for Violin and Cello (April 6, 1922).

A replacement 3,000-seat hall was commissioned in 1927  by piano manufacturer Pleyel et Cie and designed by Gustave Lion.  The inauguration concert by the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, with Robert Casadesus as soloist and Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, and Philippe Gaubert as conductors, included music by Wagner, Manuel de Falla, Igor Stravinsky, Paul Dukas, Debussy, and Ravel. A fire ravaged the interior of the hall on 28 June 1928 and the renovation cost made it impossible to repay the loan to Crédit Lyonnais bank, which eventually took over the property and reduced the seats to 2,400. They in turn sold the hall to Hubert Martigny in 1998.

Stravinsky returned to Paris to conduct the French premiere of Agon in 1957, and of Threni in 1958.

From 2002 to 2006, the hall underwent major renovation.  The acoustics of the hall and the public and service areas were improved, and seating decreased from the post-fire 2,400 seats to 1,913.

The Salle Pleyel has been owned by the Cité de la Musique since 2009. Its status as a classical music venue effectively ended in January 2015, when its programming was transferred to the newly-opened Philharmonie de Paris concert hall.

Theatre des Champs Elysees

Theatre des Champs Elysees

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, 15 Avenue Montaigne, 75008 Paris,

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is a theatre at 15 avenue Montaigne in Paris. The theater is named not after the famed Avenue des Champs-Élysées, but rather after the neighborhood which it is situated in, the Quartier des Champs-Élysées.

Opened in 1913, it was designed by French architect Auguste Perret  and founded by journalist and impresario Gabriel Astruc to provide a venue suitable for contemporary music, dance and opera, in contrast to traditional, more conservative, institutions like the Paris Opera. It hosted the Ballets Russes for its first season, staging the world première of the Rite of Spring on Thursday May 29, 1913, thus becoming the celebrated location of one of the most famous of all classical music riots.

Finished in 1913, the venue is one of few major examples of Art Deco in the city.  Perret’s building was significant as an early landmark of reinforced concrete construction  and, at the time, shockingly plain in appearance.

The building’s concrete construction was not merely a stylistic choice. Subsoil conditions and the site’s proximity to the Seine made concrete necessary. Henry van de Velde was the initial architect, resigning when it was clear that the contractors, the Perret brothers, had a far deeper understanding of the project than he did—although the Perrets were not licensed architects and had another designer, Roger Bouvard, sign their plans.

The building includes an exterior bas relief by Antoine Bourdelle, a dome by Maurice Denis, paintings by Édouard Vuillard and Jacqueline Marval, and a stage curtain by Ker-Xavier Roussel. The building houses two smaller stages, the Comédie des Champs-Élysées theatre on the 3rd floor, and the Studio des Champs-Élysées on the 5th floor.

Although Astruc was soon financially overextended, the first season was extraordinary. The theatre opened on April 2, 1913, with a gala concert featuring five of France’s most renowned composers conducting their own works: Claude Debussy (Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune), Paul Dukas (L’apprenti sorcier), Gabriel Fauré (La naissance de Vénus), Vincent d’Indy (Le camp from Wallenstein), and Camille Saint-Saëns (Phaeton and excerpts from his choral work La lyre et la harpe). This was followed the next day with a performance of Hector Berlioz’s opera Benvenuto Cellini conducted by Felix Weingartner which included a “dance spectacular” by Anna Pavlova. Later there was a series of concerts devoted to Beethoven conducted by Weingartner and featuring the pianists Alfred Cortot and Louis Diémer, and the soprano Lilli Lehmann. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam conducted by Willem Mengelberg gave two concerts: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the Paris premiere of Fauré’s opera Pénélope (May 10).

Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes presented the company’s fifth season, although their first in the new theatre, opening on May 15 with Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade (as choreographed by Michel Fokine), and the world premiere of Debussy’s Jeux (with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and designs by Léon Bakst). Some in the audiences had been offended by the depiction on stage of a tennis game in Jeux, but this was nothing compared to the reaction to the ritual sacrifice in Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring on May 29. Carl Van Vechten described the scene as follows:

“A certain part of the audience was thrilled by what it considered to be a blasphemous attempt to destroy music as an art, and, swept away with wrath, began very soon after the rise of the curtain, to make cat-calls and to offer audible suggestions as to how the performance should proceed. The orchestra played unheard, except occasionally when a slight lull occurred. The young man seated behind me in the box stood up during the course of the ballet to enable himself to see more clearly. The intense excitement under which he was labouring betrayed itself presently when he began to beat rhythmically on top of my head with his fists. My emotion was so great that I did not feel the blows for some time”.

Marie Rambert heard someone in the gallery call out: “Un docteur … un dentiste … deux docteurs….”The second performance (June 4) was fortunately less eventful, and, according to Maurice Ravel, the entire work could actually be heard.

The first season ended on June 26, 1913, with a performance of Pénélope, and the new one opened on October 2 with the same work. On October 9 d’Indy conducted Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz. On October 15 Debussy conducted the Ibéria section from his orchestral triptych Images pour orchestre, and a week later he conducted his cantata La damoiselle élue. By November 20 Astruc was out of money and was ejected from the theatre, and the sets and costumes were impounded. The following season consisted of operas presented by Covent Garden and the Boston Opera Company. The theatre closed during World War I but reopened in 1919 for a short season presented by Pavlova’s ballet company.

The theatre was purchased by Madame Ganna Walska (Mrs. Harold Fowler McCormick) in 1922. From 1923 the smaller Comédie stage upstage was the home of Louis Jouvet’s long-running medical satire, Dr. Knock, and in late 1924 the theatre also premiered the Ballets suédois production of Francis Picabia’s “instantaneist” ballet Relâche, with music by Erik Satie.

Three of Jean Giraudoux’s plays premiered here: Siegfried in 1928, Amphitryon 38 in 1929, and Intermezzo in 1933.

The theatre shows about three staged opera productions a year, mostly baroque or chamber works, suited to the modest size of its stage and orchestra pit. In addition, it houses an important concert season. It is home to two orchestras: the Orchestre National de France and Orchestre Lamoureux, as well as the French base of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Ensemble orchestral de Paris play most of their concerts here too, along with other dance, chamber music, recital and pop events.

Although the theatre is privately owned, it is supported by the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, which has owned the building since 1970.

Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art’ premiered on the Comédie stage in 1994, winning two Molière awards.<sup
Prices can be expensive for the main stage, and vary widely even for a particular event, from €5 for restricted visibility to €150 for the best seats (April 2006).

The theater, both outside and inside, was featured in the 1973 French espionage movie Le Silencieux (in a role somewhat similar to the one played by the Royal Albert Hall in Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much). Most recently it appears in Jan Kounen’s “Igor Stravinsky and Coco Chanel” (released in the U.S in the summer of 2010), starring Mads Mikkelsen and Anna Mougalis in the title roles. The film begins with a brief exterior shot followed by an extensive recreation of the original staging of the “Rite of Spring” and the resulting commotion in the audience.

Theatre du Chatelet

Theatre du Chatelet

Théâtre du Châtelet, 2 rue Edouard Colonne, 75001 Paris,

Phone:+33 1 40 28 28 28; Fax:+33 1 42 36 89 75;

The Théâtre du Châtelet (French pronunciation: [teɑtʁ dy ʃatlɛ]) is a theatre and opera house, located in the place du Châtelet in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France.

One of two theatres (the other being the Théâtre de la Ville) built on the site of a châtelet, a small castle or fortress, it was designed by Gabriel Davioud at the request of Baron Haussmann between 1860 and 1862. Originally built with 3,000 seats, it was named the Théâtre Impérial du Châtelet, but has undergone remodeling and name changes over the years. Currently it seats 2,500 people.

The theatre is one of two apparent twins constructed along the quays of the Seine, facing each other across the open Place du Châtelet and its ornate fountain. The other is the Théâtre de la Ville (previously the Sarah Bernhardt). Their external architecture is essentially Palladian entrances under arcades, although their interior layouts differ considerably. At the centre of the plaza is a sphinx-endowed fountain, erected in 1808, which commemorates Napoleon’s victory in Egypt.

The Théâtre du Châtelet was originally used for drama performances. Notably, beginning in April 1876, the stage version of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, adapted by Verne and Adolphe d’Ennery, began a run spanning sixty-four years and 2,195 performances (although not continuously). It was only the Nazi occupation of Paris in May 1940 that closed this production permanently.

Into the 20th Century, the theatre was used for operettas, variety and ballet performances, for classical and popular music concerts. It was also, for a time, a cinema. Regular seasons of opera and ballet were presented by a variety of impresarios, among them Gabriel Astruc, who introduced Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes here. Igor Stravinsky’s Petrouchka received its premiere in the theatre on 13 June 1911, as did Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau’s Parade on 18 May 1917. In addition, many foreign composers and conductors made appearances in the theatre, including Tchaikovsky, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss.

Since 1979, it has been operated by the City of Paris, and, after undergoing a major restoration, re-opened under the name of the Théâtre Musical de Paris in 1980. It was acoustically re-modeled again in 1989 and reverted to the Théâtre du Châtelet name. It is currently mainly used for opera performances and concerts.

Under the direction of Stéphane Lissner for four years from 1995, the theatre received additional improvements in acoustics and sightlines.

In recent years, the theatre has become the home of the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Since 1993 the Philharmonia Orchestra of London has an annual residency period. Shirley Horn recorded her 1992 live album I Love You, Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Phone:+33 3 26 50 31 00; Fax:+33 3 26 84 90 02;

Phone:+33 3 88 75 48 00; Fax:+33 3 88 24 09 34;

L’Opéra national du Rhin is an opera company which performs in Alsace, eastern France, and which includes the Opéra in Strasbourg, the company’s ballet in Mulhouse (a national centre for choreography since 1985), and the “Opéra Studio” (formerly the “Jeunes Voix du Rhin”), a training centre for young singers, in Colmar. A reflection of its importance is the status of “national opera” which it has held since 1997. Performances of seven or eight operas per season are given in Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar.

The first opera house opened in Strasbourg in 1701 in a converted granary. After a fire and temporary locations, a new Théâtre municipal opened in the Place Broglie in 1821. This building was virtually gutted during the German bombardment of 1870, but it was rebuilt in identical style, re-opening in 1873.

During the German era up to 1919, several eminent conductors held posts at the Strasbourg opera: Hans Pfitzner (1910–19), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1910–11), Otto Klemperer (1914–17) and George Szell (1917–1919). From 1919-38 Paul Bastide was musical director; he returned after the Second World War with notable stagings of Béatrice et Bénédict (first French staging), and Martine by Rabaud (premiere).
From 1948-53, under Roger Lalande, the theatre saw the first French productions of Peter Grimes (1949), Mathis der Maler (1951), and The Rake’s Progress (1952). The spirit of innovation continued under Frédéric Adam, director from 1955-72 – a Ring with Birgit Nilsson and French premieres of Il prigioniero, Oedipus rex, Jenůfa, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Dalibor; there was also a production of Les Troyens.

The merger to form the Opéra du Rhin took place in 1972 under the conductor Alain Lombard, with the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse being the performance orchestras in those locations. In the early years, Lombard attempted to revive the repertoire, as well as attract big names such as Birgit Nilsson and Montserrat Caballé. At the end of the 1970s Lombard was succeeded by René Terrasson, a former singer and architect, who also produced some works himself. Since that time, directors have included Laurent Spielman (1991-1997), Rudolf Berger (1997-2003), and Nicholas Snowman (2003-2009). Since 2009, the current director is Marc Clémeur.

The Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse is an opera house and ballet company located within the main administration buildings, the Capitole, of the city of Toulouse in south-west France.

The first performance space, a salle du jeu de spectacle, was created in the building in 1736 by Guillaume Cammas. Following a period of neglect, the current space was created during the rebuild of 1818. The theatre suffered fire damage in 1917, but was restored in 1923. The front of house areas were modernised in 1996. The current capacity is 1156 seats.

Michel Plasson was responsible for the artistic direction of the company from 1973. He was followed by Jacques Doucet in 1981, by Nicolas Joel in 1991, and by Frédéric Chambert in 2009, after Joel’s move to the Opéra national de Paris. Chambert’s first season was marked by the use of alternate spaces while the theatre was renovated, and the theatre was re-opened for the beginning of the 2010-11 season.

The opera company is a member of the Réunion des Opéras de France.

The Royal Opera of Versailles Opéra royal de Versailles is the main theatre and opera house of the Palace of Versailles. Designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, it is also known as the Théâtre Gabriel. The interior decoration by Augustin Pajou is constructed almost entirely of wood, painted to resemble marble in a technique known as faux marble. The excellent acoustics of the opera house are at least partly due to its wooden interior.
The house is located at the northern extremity of the north wing of the palace. General public access to the theater is gained through the two-story vestibule. Some parts of the Opéra, such as the King’s Loge and the King’s Boudoir represent some of the earliest expressions of what would become known as Louis XVI style.

Lully’s Persée — written in 1682, the year Louis XIV moved into the palace — inaugurated the Opéra on 16 May 1770 in celebration of the marriage of the dauphin — the future Louis XVI — to Marie-Antoinette.

The Opéra Royal can serve either as a theater for opera, stage plays, or orchestral events, when it can accommodate an audience of 712, or as a ballroom, when the floor of the orchestra level of the auditorium can be raised to the level of the stage. On these occasions, the Opéra can accommodate 1,200.

Originally used only for royal ceremonies and extraordinary performances,  this pinnacle of the Gabriel family’s work began to be used less and less because of the immense cost to stage productions there. During the period of its usage, however, it was a beautiful example of royal lavishness and love for theatrical performances, and the fact that attending opera was once again the fashionable thing to do for the upper class, thanks in part to Queen Marie Antoinette’s patronage, should not be underestimated.
When the royal family left Versailles in October 1789, the château and the Opéra were closed. While the château did see some activity under Napoléon I (redecoration of the parts of the queen’s apartment for the empress Marie-Louise) and Louis XVIII, the Opéra did not reopen again until 1837, when Louis-Philippe redecorated the theater and presented Molière’s Le Misanthrope. During the state visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert the Opéra Royal was converted into a banquet room for a gala dinner on 25 August 1855. This was to be one of the most elaborate events staged at Versailles during the Second Empire.

In 1872, during the Commune de Paris, the Opéra was converted by Edmond de Joly for use by the Assemblée nationale, who used the Opéra until 1876; between 1876 and 1879, the Sénat convened here.

1952-1957 witnessed major restoration of the Opéra – generally considered one of the finest restoration projects undertaken at Versailles – when it was restored under the direction of André Japy to its 1770 state (Verlet, p. 384). The Opéra officially reopened on 9 April 1957 in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, with a presentation of Act II of Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes. Since its restoration, the Opéra has been used for state functions as well as a variety of operatic and musical events (Langlois, 1958).

The Opéra was most recently closed in June of 2007 for an extensive two year renovation to bring the backstage and production areas up to safety standards. During this latest renovation, led by chief architect of Historical Monuments Frédéric Didiera, a new firewall was installed, the downstage timberframe stairs were restored to their original purpose, stage and lighting equipment were modernized, the technical grid was redone, dressing rooms were moved and brought up to modern standards, and adjacent spaces formerly given over to the Sénat, including the Actor’s Building, were reclaimed to once again accommodate the needs of performers, workshops, and offices. The Opéra reopened its doors in September of 2009, and has since carried out an expanded and ambitious regular series of operatic, balletic, and concert performances, especially celebrating the works of the Baroque and Classical periods most closely associated with the Opéra and the Palace of Versailles.

Today, with its superb acoustics and magnificent décor, the Opéra represents one of the finest 18th century opera houses in Europe. The importance of the Opéra Royal is directly linked to the history of the many theatres at Versailles and the history of theatrical stagings in 17th and 18th century France.
