Han studerade vid Moskvas Konservatorium och fick sin första scenerfarenhet 1989 vid Moskvas Operastudio. 1994, under sin första säsong som förstetenor vid Stanislavskijteatern, vann han den ryktbara Gayarretävlingen i Spanien och blev därefter inbjuden till Marinskijteatern i St Petersburg. Med Marinskijteatern framträdde han som solist i Verdis Requiem vid Edinburghfestivalen och Hollandfestivalen i Amsterdam och till Theatre des Champs Elusées i Paris och Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia i Rom. I februari 1996 debuterade han på La Scala i Prokofievs Spelaren och i Stravinskijs Les Noces. Senare samma säsong sjöng han i Montpellier och i Boris Godunov. Sergey Kunaev graduated from the Russian Academy of music by Gnesiny in Moscow in 1990. He was employed at the Academy Opera Studio where he performed Herman in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades (30 performances) and Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. The artist sang Gounod’s Faust at the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory.In 1993-1995 he was the soloist of the Stanislavskiy & Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre where he sang title parts in Verdi’s Ernani and in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. Since 1995 S. Kunaev was the soloist of the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre where he performed Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermour, Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Vodemon in Iolanta, Alfred in Traviata, Radames in Aida. In 1986 the artist sang in Gounod’s Faust at the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory. In 1993 he performed Jose in Carmen at the Concert Hall by Tchaikovsky. Sergey Kunaev collaborated on tour performing with the theatres: Théàtre des Champs Elisée in Paris, the Grand Theatre in Geneva, the Korum Theatre in Montpelier, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Semperoper in Dresden, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro Alla Scala Milano and with the Edinburg festival. Also he performed at such concert halls as: Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, Milano Conservatory, the Consertgebouw, Amsterdam, the Rotterdam Philharmony, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, at the Köln Philharmony, at the Danish Radio in Copenhagen etc. Many of his performances were broadcasted.The first tour of the artist was in 1995. It was the role of Faust in La Damnation de Faust of Berlioz at the Accademia Santa Cecilia, Roma conductor Valeryi Gergiev. After his first successes he performed with Mariinsky Theatre not once in Vedi’s Requiem at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam,.Cavaradossi in Tosca, Utrecht, in Sadko at the Edinburg Festival, Faust in La Damnation de Faust at the Rotterdam Philharmony.Sergey Kunaev performed with famous conductors: Riccardo Muti, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Jurovsky, Vladimir Fedoseev, Semyon Bychkov, Oleg Caetani. He collaborated with such producers as Franco Zeffirelli, Timur Tchheidze, Jean-Louis Martinoty, Nicolas Joel, Andre Serban, Uve Laufenberg.Since 1995 S. Kunaev has toured a lot around Europe theatres where he performed the role of Paolo in Rachmaninov’s Francesca da Rimini at the Théâtre des Champs Elisée in Paris with the Radio-France Orchestra. In February 1996 he covered the part of Alexey in Prokofiev’s The Gambler in production of Teatro Alla Scala (cond. Valery Gergiev). 17 February, 1996 he sang in Stravinsky’s Svadebka (Milan Philharmonic Orchestra and Teatro Alla Scala Choir; cond. Gabbiani).
