Assumptions and objectives

  • The Wiener Staatsoper extends its auditorium virtually and enables its audience to follow selected performances at home, live and in highest
  • The Wiener Staatsoper enhances its international appeal and proofs its reputation as one of the leading opera houses also in the digital
  • WIENER STAATSOPER live at home makes the Wiener Staatsoper an international leader in the use and continued development of innovative technologies for the distribution of its performances. No other opera house can offer a programme of such scope and quality to its international
  • In 2012, after 13 years of decline, the global music market grew again for the first time. The reversal of this trend is only due to the enormous growth of the digital market, which now accounts for a share of more than a third. The Wiener Staatsoper’s payable live programme will not only open up new revenue streams for the opera house and its artists, but also send a strong international message that art on a digital platform also has a value and must be paid for

 

The programme

  • Since 27 October 2013, an unlimited number of opera lovers worldwide have been able to watch a selection of live opera and ballet performances at home via the internet – be it on computer or laptop, mobile devices, SmartTVs, on Amazon Fire TV or the new Apple
  • Video and audio are transmitted in highest quality – up to full HD depending on the internet connection.
  • Viewers are able to choose between two channels at any time during the broadcast: a total view of the stage, or the live-cut opera- or ballet-film.
  • The broadcasts start 30 minutes before the performance with backstage views, information about the Wiener Staatsoper and the artists, synopses of the streamed works, etc. During the intervals viewers enjoy live impressions from the house, interviews, making-ofs and related editorial
  • The broadcasts are transmitted live from the Vienna and time zone delayed at global prime times within 72 hours (starting time can be chosen when purchasing).
  • Subtitles and for selected broadcasts also scores are provided in the “Wiener Staatsoper Live App”, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Google Play Store and the App Store.
  • The “Wiener Staatsoper Publications App” also to be found in Google Play Store and App Store, offers rich multimedia programme booklets in English and
  • A number of recorded opera and ballet productions are available in a video store on com and can be viewed as on-demand streams for a week each.

 

Infrastructure

  • The Wiener Staatsoper has installed eight remote full HD cameras as well as new, state-of- the-art digital video and digital audio studios. The filming work for the live broadcasts does in no way impact either members of the public visiting the opera house or the artists on

 

 

  • For the live editing of opera and ballet streams, the Wiener Staatsoper has recruited and trained in-house video teams consisting of two cameramen, a musical score assistant, a director and assistant director. l

 

Costs and financing

  • The live broadcast of an opera or ballet performance from the Wiener Staatsoper costs € 14,-. The payment system is easy to use and secure
  • In addition to the monthly (€ 16,90) and yearly (€ 159,-) subscriptions, a “Single” (€ 14,-) and a “Smart” ticket (8 live broadcasts at free choice for € 88,-) are
  • An on-demand stream from the video store costs € 5,- and is available for a
  • The digital programme booklet costs € 2,69.
