Andrew Richards has won international recognition as an exciting lirico-spinto tenor in theaters including the Berlin State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Opera-Bastille, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Frankfurt Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Munich, Theatre Royale de la Monnaie, Brussels, Vienna State Opera, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste, Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Teatro Maestranza, Seville, L’Opera Comique in Paris, L’Opera de Marseille, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste, L Opera de Nice, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburg State Opera as well at the Arena di Verona, Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, Bregenz Festival, and in Aix en Provence. He has won special acclaim as Don Jose in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and the title role in Don Carlos, Pollione in Norma and as Werther.
In 2010 Richards sang his first Wagnerian role, appearing at the Stuttgart Opera in a new production of Parsifal. He also starred as Parsifal at the Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels in their new production of the work 2011.
In the 2012/2013 season, Richards made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Don Jose in Carmen. He then sang the role of Cavarodossi in Tosca with Stuttgart. He also appeared in Stuttgart as Parsifal. Engagements for the 2013/2014 season include Licinius Spontini’s La Vestale at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris and his debut as Laca in Jenufa at the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels.
Andrew Richards began the 2011/2012 season as Cavaradossi at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. He returned to the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, where he made his actual Italian debut in Carmen, as Arrigo in La Battaglia di Legnano.
In recent season Richards has made several important debuts and also made significant additions to his repertoire. In the fall of 2007 he made his debut at the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels in his first performances of the title role in Massenet’s Werther. He made his Spanish debut in the same role at the Teatro Maestranza in Seville and subsequently debuted as Werther at the Vienna State Opera. He also sang the role in Munich. Richards was heard at the Bregenz Festival in the summer of 2007 in Tosca and returned there the following summer as well. In 2008 he then sang his first performances of Pollione in Norma at the Berlin State Opera, followed by his debut in the title role of Samson et Dalila at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Richards made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen in Don Carlos. He then sang Pinkerton in the Cologne Opera’s new production of Madama Butterfly and returned to Munich in Norma in Munich opposite Edita Gruberova. In June of 2009 Richards made his debut in Paris at the Opera Comique in a new production of Carmen under John Elliot Gardiner. He returned to the Arena di Verona in the same role. In the 2009/2010 season Andrew Richards sang his first Wagnerian role, appearing as Parsifal in a new production of the work at the Stuttgart Opera. Other highlights of the past season included Carmen at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and at the Arena di Verona, and Macduff in Macbeth at the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels. He was also heard as Pinkerton at the Berlin State Opera. In the fall of the 2010, Richards made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Don Jose. He also sang his first Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra with L’Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg. Richards returned to La Monnaie in Brussels for the new production of Parsifal, and to the Hamburg State Opera as Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana. In April 2011, he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Carmen.
A graduate of Eastman School of Music Andrew Richards has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including the first prizes from the 1999 Enrico Caruso Competition, Liederkranz Vocal Competition and the Opera Index as well as having received special grants from the Puccini Foundation and the Sullivan Foundation Award Winner. He completed his stage training as Artist in Residence at the Pittsburgh Opera Center and began his professional career at the Sarasota Opera, Pittsburgh Opera and at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. Developing his repertoire with companies throughout North America, he had great success as Rodolfo in La Boheme in Miami, Ottawa, Calgary and Kansas City, as Lensky in Eugene Onegin with Opera Colorado, as Pinkerton in MadamaButterfly with the New York City Opera, Cleveland Opera, Miami Opera and as the Duke in Rigoletto, Macduff in Macbeth and Alfredo in La Traviata for Opera Pacific.
Other roles in his developing repertoire include the title roles in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Offenbach’s Les Contes D’Hoffmann and Maurizio in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur.
