Axel Kober German conductor

Kober was born in Kronach and studied conducting under Peter Falk and Günther Wich at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. His first professional engagement was with the Mecklenburg State Theatre in 1994. From 1998 to 2003 he was the chief conductor of the Theater Dortmund, where he conducted several rarely performed operas, including the German premiere of Charpentier’s Julien. Following a 4-year stint at the National Theatre Mannheim (2003–2007) where he served as its chief conductor, and two years as Music Director of the Leipzig Opera (2007–2009), he was appointed Music Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In 2013, the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth, Kober made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival conducting Tannhäuser and conducted it again at the 2014 festival.

Axel Kober  completed his studies at the Music College in Würzburg, studying with Peter Falk and Günther Wick. In 1994 he embarked upon his first engagement at the State Theatre in Schwerin. From 1994 to 2003 he was appointed first staff conductor and deputy to the General music director at the Dortmund theatre. In 2003 Axel Kober became deputy of the General music director at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and in 2006 took over as Music director. During this time he conducted  the major works of Richard Wagner, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, Lohengrin and Der Ring des Nibelungen.

In 2007 he was appointed Music director of the Leipzig Opera, together with Riccardo Chailly he was responsible for the musical life in the city. In 2007 he made his debut at the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig which led to a steady relationship.

In 2009 he was appointed General music director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf /Duisburg.

As a guest Kober has conducted at the Royal Opera Copenhagen, Nuremberg State theatre, Volksoper Vienna, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Halle Orchestra and the NDR Orchestra.

Leben

Axel Kober studierte an der Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg.

1994 folgte er einem ersten Engagement an das Staatstheater Schwerin. 1998 ging er ans Theater Dortmund, wo er Erster Kapellmeister und stellvertretender GMD wurde. 2003 wechselte er an das Nationaltheater Mannheim. Dort wurde er 2005/06 zum Stellvertreter des GMD und im darauffolgenden Jahr zum kommissarischen GMD berufen. 2007 übernahm Axel Kober als Musikdirektor zusammen mit Riccardo Chailly die musikalische Leitung der Oper in Leipzig. Seit der Spielzeit 2009/2010 ist Axel Kober Generalmusikdirektor der Deutschen Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf/Duisburg.

Gastspiele führten ihn an die Königliche Oper Kopenhagen, an die Volksoper Wien und das Theater Basel. Er wurde unter anderem nach Hamburg zum NDR Sinfonieorchester und an die Staatsoper eingeladen. Im Jahr 2009 gab er sein Debüt an der Deutschen Oper Berlin.

Axel Kober dirigierte bei den Bayreuther Festspielen 2014, zur Eröffnung und anschließend noch weitere fünf Mal, Wagners Oper Tannhäuser und 2015 den Fliegenden Holländer.

Axel Kober – dirigent – conductor. Han er uddannet ved konservatoriet i Würzburg, og arbejdede som repetitör og assisterende dirigent ved operan i Schwerin fra 1994. I 1998 kom han til operaen i Dortmund. hvor han hurtigt blev chefdirigent og stedfortraeder for musikchefen. Han har desuden vaeret fast gaest ved operaen i Leipzig. Fra 2006/2007-saesonen tiltræder Axel Kober som musikchef ved operaen i Mannheim hvor han fra 2003- 2005 var förste kapelmester og siden da har været stedfortræder for musikchefen.
