Bejun Mehta is one of the most acclaimed countertenors in the world. He is a regular guest at the world’s great opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Opéra Nationale de Paris, Theater an der Wien, the Berlin State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera Munich, the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, De Nederlandse Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Teatro Real Madrid, the Zurich Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, as well as the Salzburg, Glyndebourne, and Aix-en-Provence Festivals and the Wiener Festwochen.
Concerts with major orchestras and solo recitals have brought Bejun Mehta to the leading concert venues, where he tours his award-winning CD programs and performs repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. He is a frequent guest at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus Wien and the Wiener Musikverein, Carnegie and Zankel Hall, New York, Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts, the Palau des Arts Valencia, Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela, the Cité de la Musique Paris, the Prinzregententheater Munich, the Berliner Konzerthaus, the Rudolfinum in Prague, and the festivals of Edinburgh, San Sebastian, Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, and the BBC Proms in London.
Bejun begins the 2015/16 season with a world premiere: George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song, a solo cantata for countertenor, female chorus, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and with Benjamin conducting. Bejun then debuts a new chamber program, Mi palpita il cor, with La Nuova Musica at London’s Wigmore Hall. A second world premiere follows: Toshio Hosokawa’s Stilles Meer for the Hamburg Staatsoper, in which Bejun creates the role of Stephan. Bejun’s multi-season tour of his Harmonia Mundi recording Che Puro Ciel with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin continues with concerts in Berlin, Madrid, and Mannheim. Bejun returns to the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin for a new production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice with Daniel Barenboim conducting. He also returns to the Zurich Opera for Handel’s Orlando with William Christie conducting the Orchestra La Scintilla. Further engagements include Belshazzar for the Salzburg Festival with Accademia Bizantina/Ottavio Dantone. Future engagements include returns to the Netherlands Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Highlights of recent seasons include the creation of the role of Angel 1/Boy in George Benjamin’s celebrated opera Written on Skin (Aix-en-Provence, the Netherlands Opera, and the ROH), Romeo Castellucci’s acclaimed 2014 production of Orfeo ed Euridice for the Wiener Festwochen, a movie version of Orfeo ed Euridice filmed at the historic Český Krumlov Castle for ArthausMusik, solo concerts at the Vienna Musikverein, the Estates Theatre Prague, and the Opera Royal Versailles, and recording Handel’s Orlando (a favorite role) for Deutsche Grammophon/Archiv. Bejun recently conducted the Belgian Baroque Orchestra B’Rock in concerts of Haydn and Mozart symphonies, and gave a series of Masterclasses for the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival.
