Iscenesatte Elskovsdrikken på Aarhus Sommeropera ’09, samme forestilling, som var hans danske debut i 99. Cowell har på Den Ny Opera i Esbjerg iscenesat bl.a. Don Pasquale (’02), Tyrken i Italien (’04) og Cosi fan tutte (’06). Han har iscenesat bl.a. Semele og Rejsen til Reims for Chicago Opera Theater og sin egen bearbeidning for Chicago Opera Theater og sin egen bearbejdning f Rossinis Askepot og Offenbachs Hoffmanns eventyr {’08) på Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

English translator and director Christopher Cowell made his Royal Opera debut in 2001 directing Cenerentola in the Linbury Studio Theatre. He has since returned to direct the 2008 revival of Les Contes d’Hoffmann on the main stage, and in 2014 wrote the translation for L’Ormindo at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Cowell studied Modern Languages and History of Art at Cambridge University. His translation credits include Medea, The Coronation of Poppea, Carmen, Radamisto and The Return of Ulysses (English National Opera), Ariadne auf Naxos, The Flying Dutchman and Faust (Chandos Recordings), Il ballo delle ingrate, Il ritorno d’Ulisse and Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (Birmingham Opera Company) and English translations for many recital discs.

Cowell’s directing credits include Semele and Il viaggio a Reims for Chicago Opera Theater, Il barbiere di Siviglia for Danish National Opera, Don Pasquale, Il turco in Italia, Rinaldo, Le nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte for Den Ny Opera, Denmark, Une Education manquée and Il campanello at Les Azuriales Festival, La traviata, Le Comte Ory and Rodelinda for Glyndebourne on Tour, Agrippina, Poro and Atalanta at the London Handel Festival and productions for numerous conservatories around the UK and in Denmark.
