Don Quichotte Massenets version av Cervantes roman var först och främst inte påverkad av själva texten utan av Gustave Dorés illustrationer vilka framställde titelpersonen i en ganska sentimental situation. Övertygad om att han skulle dö av den smärtsamma reumatism han led av, försakade han alla andra musikplaner till förmån för Don Quichotte. Komponerandet var för honom “balsam för själen” och alldeles säkert såg han sig själv i rollen som Don Quijote som höll fast vid sin ridderliga hederskodex på samma sätt som Massenet höll fast vid sin tonala musik i skuggan av samtida tonsättare såsom Debussy med Pelléas och Mélisande och Richard Strauss med Salome och Elektra.
Don Quichotte 1910 synopsis
1. akt
Alle hylder Dulcineas skønhed. Hendes fire elskere synger serenader for hende fra gaden uden for hendes hus. Hun viser sig, men trækker sig tilbage igen, inden Don Quichotte ankommer. Don Quichotte er en ældre mand, der er blevet gal og som nu tror, at han er en galant ridder fra forgangne tider. Hans ven og riddersvend, Sancho Panza, følger ham, hvor end han går og forsøger forgæves at forhindre ham i at komme galt af sted.
Don Quichotte er også dybt forelsket i den skønne Dulcinea. Han synger en serenade for hende, men Juan, én af hendes unge elskere, håner ham. Mændene slås, men bliver standset af Dulcinea, som synes, at Don Quichottes gale galanteri er morsomt på en charmerende måde. Den ældre mand tilbyder hende sit hjerte. Hun foreslår, at han skal udføre en opgave for hende – han skal få en værdifuld halskæde tilbage, som blev stjålet fra hende af en farlig bande. 2. akt
Don Quichotte er nu endnu mere forelsket i Dulcinea. Det gør Sancho Panza vred, da han nærer mistillid til alle kvinder.Don Quichotte får øje på en række vindmøller i det fjerne og tror i sin galskab, at de er en hær af kæmper. Til Sancho Panzas skræk angriber han en af dem.Don Quichotte tror, at han nærmer sig banditternes tilflugtssted. Sancho Panza sover, mens Don Quichotte holder vagt. Banditterne dukker pludselig op og tager ridderen til fange. De planlægger at slå ham ihjel, men da han beder en bøn, bevæger hans inderlige ord dem så meget, at de giver ham halskæden og sætter ham fri.
3. akt

Akt. 4
Der festes. Dulcinea keder sig, og er uinteresseret i opmærksomheden fra hendes elskere. Don Quichotte ankommer, ivrig efter at give sin elskede hendes halskæde. Han lover at belønne Sancho Panza med en ø, et slot og alverdens rigdomme. Dulcinea er henrykt og forbløffet over at få sin halskæde tilbage. Don Quichotte frier til hende, men til sin skræk møder han kun hysterisk latter fra alle de tilstedeværende. Dulcinea undskylder, og forklarer at hun aldrig vil kunne gengælde Don Quichottes kærlighed. På trods af hendes venlighed gør hendes venner og unge elskere ondskabsfuldt grin med den gamle mand, fordi han kunne tro, at Dulcinea ville gengælde hans kærlighed. Sancho Panza er knust over at se sin herre – og nu sin helt – blive behandlet sådan.
5. akt
Det er en smuk og stjerneklar aften, og Don Quichotte ligger for døden. Han husker at have lovet Sancho Panza en ø som belønning, og han tilbyder ham i stedet en drømmenes ø.Idet han tager sit sidste åndedrag, hører Don Quichotte Dulcineas stemme, der kalder på ham.

Akt I
Don Quichotte och hans tjänare Sancho rider in på torget i en liten stad där den sköna Dulcinée bor. De följs av tiggare. På kvällen sjunger don Quichotte En serenad nedanför den skönas fönster, vilket retar upp hennes älskare. Dulcinée förhindrar en duell och lovar att älska don Quichotte om han skaffar tillbaka ett halssmycke som hon har blivit bestulen på.
Akt II
På vägen ut för att hitta rövarna som har stulit smycket råkar don Quichotte i strid med en här av väderkvarnar och när han är framme vid rövarlägret blir han genast tillfångatagen.
Akt III
Hans höviska uppträdande imopnerar så på rövarna att de ger honom smycket. Han kan alltså återvända till Dulcinée.
Akt IV
Dulcinéee blir överlycklig, men då don Quichotte ber henne gifta sig med honom måste hon rörd säga nej tack och avslöja sitt verkliga yrke.
Akt V
Don Quichotte ligger för döden och ser i sin förvirring den ouppnåeliga Dulcinée, som han sänder en sista hälsning medan Sancho fäller äkta tårar över förlusten av sin herre, som fört honom in i drömmarnas rike.

Act 1
A square in front of Dulcinée’s house
A festival is being celebrated. Four hopeful admirers of Dulcinée serenade her from the street. Dulcinée appears and explains philosophically that being adored is not enough, ‘Quand la femme a vingt ans’ (‘When a woman is twenty’). She withdraws and a crowd, largely of beggars, acclaim the arrival of the eccentric knight Don Quichotte (riding on his horse Rossinante) and his comic squire Sancho Panza (on a donkey). Delighted by their attention, Don Quichotte tells a reluctant Sancho to throw them money.
After the crowd disperse, Don Quichotte himself serenades Dulcinée, ‘Quand apparaissent les étoiles’ (‘When the stars begin to shine’) but he is stopped by Juan, a jealous admirer of the local beauty. A sword fight follows, interrupted by Dulcinée herself. She is charmed by Don Quichotte’s antique attentions, chides Juan for his jealousy and sends him away. The old man offers her his devotion and a castle. She suggests instead that he might retrieve a pearl necklace of hers stolen by Ténébrun, the bandit chief. He undertakes to do so, and Dulcinée quickly rejoins her men friends.

Act 2
In the countryside
A misty morning, Don Quichotte and Sancho enter with Rossinante and the donkey. Don Quichotte is composing a love poem. Sancho delivers a grand tirade against their expedition, against Dulcinée, and against women in general. ‘Comment peut-on penser du bien de ces coquines’ (‘How can anyone think anything good of those hussies’). The mists disperse revealing a line of windmills that Don Quichotte takes for a group of giants. To Sancho’s horror, Don Quichotte attacks the first one, only to be caught up in one of the sails and hoisted up in the air.

Act 3
In the mountains
Dusk, Don Quichotte believes they are getting close to the bandits. Sancho goes to sleep while Don Quichotte stands guard. The bandits suddenly appear and after a brief fight take the knight prisoner. Sancho escapes. Surprised by the defiance of the old man, the bandits give him a beating and intend to kill him, however Don Quichotte’s prayer ‘Seigneur, reçois mon âme, elle n’est pas méchante’ (‘Lord receive my soul, it is not evil’) moves Ténébrun, the bandit chief, to mercy. Don Quichotte explains his mission ‘Je suis le chevalier errant’ (‘I am the Knight-errant’), and the necklace is returned to him. The bandits ask for the blessing of the noble knight before he leaves.
Act 4
The garden of Dulcinée’s House
Music and dancing, a party is in progress, but Dulcinée is melancholy, ‘Lorsque le temps d’amour a fui’ (‘When the time of love has gone’). Rousing herself, she snatches a guitar and sings ‘Ne pensons qu’au plaisir d’aimer’ (‘Think just of the pleasures of love’). All retire to dinner. Sancho and Don Quichotte arrive. While waiting for Dulcinée, Sancho asks for his reward to which Don Quichotte responds with vague promises of an island, a castle, riches. Dulcinée and her party greet the knight and he returns the necklace to universal acclaim. However, when he asks her to marry him he is greeted with hysterical laughter.
Taking pity, Dulcinée tells the others to leave, apologizes ‘Oui, je souffre votre tristesse, et j’ai vraiment chagrin à vous désemparer’ (‘I share your sorrow and am truly sorry’) but explains that her destiny, her way of life, is different from his. She kisses him on the forehead and leaves. But the company return to make fun of the old man. Sancho vigorously upbraids them, ‘Riez, allez, riez du pauvre idéologue’ (‘Laugh, laugh at this poor idealist’) and takes his master away.
Act 5
A mountain pass in an ancient forest
A clear starry night, Don Quichotte is dying. He remembers once promising Sancho an island as his reward, and offers him an isle of dreams, ‘Prends cette île’ (‘Take that isle’). Nearing death, Don Quichotte looks up at a star shining brightly above and hears the voice of Dulcinée calling him to another world. Then he collapses as Sancho weeps over his body.
