George Gagnidze has been awarded prizes at several international singing contests. In the year 2000, for instance, he was a finalist in the Leyla Gencer Voice Competition in Istanbul, where he was awarded a special prize. In 2001, he won first prize in the Elena Obraztsova Young Opera Singers Competition. This success was followed in 2005 with first prize at the Concorso Voci Verdiane, the most important international competition for budding Verdi interpreters. Guest performances have taken George Gagnidze to the Sofia National Opera House and to St Petersburg. In 2005, he performed several opera evenings at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt with the SWR Radio Orchestra Kaiserslautern under the musical direction of Peter Falk. In the same year, he toured Japan, singing in concerts conducted by the maestro Lorin Maazel.

Since the 2005/2006 season, George Gagnidze has been a member of the German National Theatre in Weimar. Here he enjoyed further successes, including as Jochanaan in Salome by Richard Strauss, as Nabucco in the opera by Giuseppe Verdi of the same name, as Posa in Verdi’s Don Carlo and as Miller in Verdi’s Luisa Miller. He also inspired the Weimar audience as Guillaume Tell in the opera by Gioacchino Rossini of the same name.

In 2007, George Gagnidze acted the role of Paolo in Simon Boccanegra under the musical direction of Lorin Maazel at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia. At the same time, George Gagnidze was also rehearsing the part of Simon Boccanegra with maestro Maazel.

In 2007, George Gagnidze made his Scala debut in Milan in the role of Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata alongside Elena Mosuc as Violetta Valéry. The performance was directed in turn by Lorin Maazel, who immediately engaged him as Baron Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca for a series of concerts in the New York Avery Fisher Hall. The singer’s performances in Milan and New York were highly acclaimed by the press and his audiences, as were his interpretation of Rigoletto at the Festival Verdi in Parma (2008) and his sensational cover as Miller in Luisa Miller in Valencia alongside Marcelo Alvarez as Rodolfo.

In the 2008/2009 season, the singer made a sensational Metropolitan Opera debut as Rigoletto.

In 2009, George Gagnidze sang the role of Rigoletto in a guest performance of the Teatro Regio di Parma at the Opera National in Beijing.

Since then, George Gagnidze has been in demand as a guest at all of the world’s leading venues, enabling him to collaborate with famous conductors such as James Levine, Jesús López Cobos, Fabio Luisi, Daniel Oren and Daniele Callegari and producers such as Giancarlo del Monaco and Luc Bondy.

George Gagnidze’s acclaimed performance in the role of Scarpia at the Met was broadcast at cinemas worldwide and has also been released on DVD.
