The Haydn Festival – which takes place annually in September – is a high point of the concert season. The works of Joseph Haydn are always at the heart of the festival. The musical focus is framed by the woks of other composers to show relationship, offer a comparison and contrast of Haydn’s works to other compositions. Furthermore, through the comparison of period instrument ensembles and “modern” orchestras, the public is given the opportunity for a direct comparison of various performing styles. Additionally, through the annual changing areas of focus, such as “Haydn and London”, “Haydn and Vocal Music”, “Hunting and Wine”, among others, access to the entire works of the master is made possible.
The Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra was founded by Adam Fischer in corporation with the Haydn Festival, and is the “orchestra-in-residence” at the Haydn Festival and has always been led by him since then. A specific of the orchestra is a so-called “Eisenstadt or Pannonian style”. Moreover, every effort has been made to record in CD-quality all of the Haydn Symphonies played in the Haydn Hall.
The consistent following and continuation of the program design, under the artistic direction of Dr. Walter Reicher, has meanwhile led to the Haydn Festival becoming the “Centre of the international world of Joseph Haydn”.
Haydn Concerts at the Esterházy Palace
Each week between April and October, the Palace rooms host concert performances. The philosophy of this series of concerts requires the interpretation of music history in its entirety from the Baroque to the present day, alongside the works of Joseph Haydn. Local musicans, as well as international artists, are offered the opportunity of a platform. Of considerable prominence are the various concert series which are built around a certain theme and which in principle extend over several years.
Cycle: “The Haydn Academy”
In 1992 Anton Gabmayer founded a special orchestra – The HaydnAcademy. It is led by the experienced conductor and Haydn expert himself. The aim of the project was the performance of all 107 Haydn Symphonies in the Haydn Hall within a period of nine years. Now the orchestra has its own subscription series. The HaydnAcademy has dedicated itself to “… the striving for original interpretation”.
Cycle: “Haydn Piano Trio”
Joseph Haydn was intensively involved with this music genre throughout his life. The Haydn Festival places the great piano trios at the centre of its own series of concerts, which offers the visitor a diverse program, and thus an interesting cross-section of the repertoire. All of the concerts are given by the Haydn Piano Trio.
