The cars competing in the latter race are known as IndyCars as a reference to the event. As headquarters for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the city frequently hosts the Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments. Indianapolis hosted Pan American Games X in 1987 and Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.
Indianapolis was founded in 1821 on the White River as a planned city for the new seat of Indiana’s state government. Nicknamed the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis is the junction for four Interstate highways, six U.S. highways, and three state roads. Indianapolis International Airport is a major international hub, ranking as the 23rd busiest airport in the world by cargo traffic in 2014.
Opera in Indianapolis
Since 1975, Indianapolis Opera has delivered the passion, excitement and art of opera throughout Indiana with compelling educational, cultural and community activities. The Indianapolis Opera Ensemble program reaches 30,000 children and adults statewide each year, with additional performances in Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky. In 2014, the company embraced an intensive organizational assessment process to examine its business operations, gather audience feedback and understand community needs in a changing environment. One of several outcomes includes the hiring of Kevin Patterson in February 2015 as Indianapolis Opera’s General Director.
The mission of Indianapolis Opera is to educate, inspire and entertain through the creation and presentation of musical storytelling for the Hoosier community.
