Jacalyn Bower mezzosopran
She has sung with some of the world’s great houses and symphonies, including Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Metropolitan Opera, Theatre du Chatelet, Theatre del Liceu, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Lyric, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera,Geneva Opera, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, Carnegie Hall, and others, under conductors such as James Levine, Zubin Mehta, James Conlin. Richard Wilcox, Peter Schneider, Jiri Kout, Valery Gergiev, Simon Rattle, Edo de Waart, Jeffrey Tate, Lorin Maazel, and Pierre Boulez.
She has recorded with Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos, Teldec, and Claves. Recent and future engagements include Mahler’s “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” songs with SLO Symphony and Michael Nowak, a premier of “E.O. 9066” with Kent Nagano conducting for the SLO Youth Orchestra’s 40th anniversary benefit, “Oedipus Rex” with Peter Schikele’s P.D.Q. Bach troupe, mezzo soloist in Prokoviev’s “Alexander Nevsky”, with Lithuanian conductor Theodore Kuchar, mezzo soloist in Duruffle’s “Requiem”, Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer”with Maestro Bruno Ferrandis, Mozart’s “Requiem” with Kuchar and the Reno Chamber Orchestra, and in recital in Kyoto Japan’s Barocksaal Hall.
Jacalyn has taught applied voice and performance at Cal Poly for 19 years, where she emphasizes not only professional voice technique and career training, but also vocal health.
A vocologist, Ms. Kreitzer teaches “Care and Repair of the Speaking and Singing Voice” classes at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, as well as private classes in the community. She is also Artistic Advisor for Opera San Luis Obispo, has produced opera at Cal Poly for the past 12 years, collaborating with Opera San Luis Obispo, and directs vocal master classes.
