Johnny van Hal was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Sweden. His musical education was at the Music Academy in Malmö and at the Opera Academy in Göteborg.

Further studies

He has studied further with Berit Lindholm, Harald Ek and Kirsten Buhl Møller and taken master classes with Håkan Hagegård, Ulla Hedblad, Alf Häggstam, Birgit Nilsson, Birgit Nordin, Kerstin Meyer, Dorothy Irving, Peter Lindroos, Jane Manning and Torbjörn Lillieqvist. Johnny van Hal is coached by Prof. Peter Berne in Kirschbach, Jeffrey Goldberg in New York, Richard Trimborn in München, Mark Pinzow in Leipzig and Gregory Lamar in New York.

Royal Danish Opera

Since 1993 he has been part of the soloist ensemble at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. In addition to his work there, he has done guest performances in Bologna, Essen, Riga, Sao Paulo, Weimar, Vienna and Zurich, amongst others.

Wagner parts

Most important in his opera repertoire are these Wagner parts:
Title parts in Tristan and Isolde, Tannhäuser, Siegfried, Parsifal and Lohengrin, as well as Erik in Der fiegen Holländer and Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Other large parts are Herod in Salome, Bacchus in Ariadne aus Naxos, Der Kaiser in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Alwa in Lulu, Sergei in Lady Machbeth of Mtsensk, The Prince in Rusalka, Florestan in Leonore, Cavaradossi in Tosca and the title part as Franz Kafka / Josef K in Kafkas Trial by Poul Ruders.

From his concert repertoire: the tenor solo in Beethoven’s “9th Symphony”, “Christ on the Mount of Olives” and “Missa Solemnis”, Dvorák’s “Requiem” and “Stabat Mater”, “The Book with Seven Seals” by Schmidt and Mahler’s “Das Lied from Earth”.

Associated with the soloist ensemble at the Royal Theater since 1993. Wagner parts such as Tristan in Tristan and Isolde, the title part in Siegfried, the title part in Tannhäuser, the title part in Parsifal, Erik in The Flying Dutchman, Walther von Stolzing in Mestersangerne and the title part in Lohengrin. Bacchus in Strauss’ Ariadne on Naxos. Florestan and Beethoven’s Fidelio. Cavaradossi and Puccinis Tosca. The title role in Poul Ruders’ Process Kafka. Alwa in Bergs Lulu and The Emperor in Richard Strauss’ The Woman Without a Shadow. Baron de Laubardemont and Devils of Loudon. Dental houses in Wagner’s dental houses.

Other engagements

In concert, he has sung with all major symphony orchestras in Denmark in works such as Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Missa Solemnis, Handel’s Messiah, Dvorak’s Requiem and Stabat Mater.
