Jonathan Summers Australian baritone

Jonathan Summers was born in Melbourne, Australia. He came to London in 1974 to study with Otakar Kraus and made his debut in 1975 as Rigoletto with Kent Opera. Between 1977 and 1986 he was a member of the Royal Opera and since then has returned as a guest artist. His roles with the Royal Opera include Balstrode in Peter Grimes, High Priest of Dagon in Samson et Dalila, Ford in Falstaff, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Iago in Otello, Nabucco and DeSireux in Fedora.

He has appeared regularly at the ENO over the years singing in many new productions – Macbeth, Simon Boccanegra, Don Carlos, Rigoletto, Un Ballo in Maschera, Force of Destino, Tristan and Isoide and Parsifal. Abroad, Jonathan Summers has sung at La 5cala, Florence, Venice, Palermo, Toulouse, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, Hamburg Brussels, Geneva, Tel Aviv, Chicago, New York and Houston as well as many appearances in Australia where he sings regularly with Opera Australia in operas including Tales of Hoffman, Otello, Falstaff, Tosca, Wozzeck, II Tabarro, Simon Boccanegra, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci and Der Fliegende Hollander.

Next season he will be repeating the role of Gepetto in Pinocchio for Opera North md singing Balstrode in Peter Grimes at the Royal Opera House.

He has has taken part in many recordings including Peter Grimes, Gloriana (Britten) Samson et Dalila, Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
