Joseph Calleja, född 22 januari 1978 på Malta, är en maltesisk operasångare. Han gjorde sin debut som Macduff i Verdis Macbeth på Gozo 1997. Han var även delvinnare vid Plácido Domingos Operalia-tävling 1999. Han gästade Kungliga Operan som Leicester i Maria Stuarda. Rodolfo i La Bohème och Hertigen i Rigoletto på DKT – Gamle Scene i Köpenhamn.

Därefter har han sjungit på flera av de förnämsta operahusen, bland annat Metropolitan i New York och Covent Garden i London. Nu senast som Rodolphe i La Bohème på Royal Operahouse i London, 2015.

Joseph Calleja, (born 22 January 1978 in Attard), is a Maltese tenor. He began singing at the age of 16, having been discovered by tenor Brian Cefai and continued his studies with Paul Asciak. At 19, he made his operatic debut as Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth at the Astra Theatre in Gozo. He went on to become a prize winner at the Belvedere Hans Gabor Competition the same year. In 1998, he won the Caruso Competition in Milan and was a prize winner in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia International Opera Competition in 1999. He has since been considered one of the most promising young tenors of the 21st century.

On 2 November 2012, the University of Malta presented Calleja with a Doctor of Literature Honoris Causa in acknowledgment of his achievements as an internationally renowned tenor.

International success

In Europe, Calleja has performed in many opera houses including Royal Opera House in London.  Vienna State Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Frankfurt Oper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg. Barcelona, Amsterdam, Munich, and many more.

Calleja made his U.S. debut in 1999 at the Spoleto Festival. Since then, he has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera. Seattle Opera, Washington National Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

He has sung at a number of summer festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and The Proms in London. Where he also appeared at Last Night of the Proms in 2012 at Royal Albert Hall and in 2013 at the Proms in the Park.  He has given outdoor concerts in Malta, Paris, Munich, and Amsterdam. He was the featured soloist at the 2011 Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm, was selected by the Maltese President to perform a private concert for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

In 2013, Calleja sang at the Kennedy Center Honors in tribute to honoree Martina Arroyo, appearing in the same program as Snoop Dogg and performing for an audience that included President Barack Obama. The event was telecast on CBS. The same year, he also performed at the Supreme Court of the United States for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as part of the Supreme Court Musicale, co-presented by the Richard Tucker Foundation. 

Calleja was named Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2012.  In the same year, Calleja was selected to serve as Malta’s first cultural ambassador  and was also named a brand ambassador for Air Malta one year later. In 2013, he teamed up with Malta’s Bank of Valletta to form the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation, which will serve to help children and families in need.
