Katarina Thoma var biträdande regissör till Richard Jones uppsättning av Billy Budd på GöteborgsOperan 2013. Året efter regisserade hon Hans & Greta på samma scen. Tidigare har hon arbetat med Vanessa på Malmö Opera och Madame Butterfly på Folkoperan i Stockholm.

Katharina Thoma är en ung lovande regissör som började arbeta med teater 2001. Innan dess studerade hon piano i Lubeck. Katharina har gjort Milhauds Le pauvre matelot och Iberts Angélique vid Kassel Staatstheater, Offenbachs Nr 66 och Vaughan Williams On Wenlock Edge vid Opera Frankfurt, Gianni Schicchi som ett studentprojekt vid Musikbauschule Mainz samt Joneleits Piero – Ende der Nacht på München Biennale.

Barnföreställningar

Katharina har även regisserat ett flertal barnförestallningar fått flera utmärkelser som tredje pris i Peter Konwitschny-tävlingen för unga regissörer för en uppsättning av Carmen och andra pris tillsammans med Julia Müer i European Opera Directinmg Competition för en uppsättning av Rusalka. I juni ska Katharina regissera La Finta Giardniera vid Oper Frankfurt.

Katharina Thoma was born in Landsberg a. Lech and studied piano at Musikhochschule Lübeck where she obtained a teachers’ diploma in 1999 and an artistic degree in 2001. Inspired by her work as an accompanist both for Lied and Opera, she became interested in directing opera and took internships at the theatres in Frankfurt, Innsbruck and Darmstadt (working a.o. with Christof Nel).

She became assistant director at Staatstheater Kassel in 2002, assisting a.o. Rosamund Gilmore and Johannes Schütz and staging chamber operas such as Le pauvre matelot by Milhaud and Angélique by Ibert.

From 2004 till 2008, she was assistant director at Frankfurt Opera, working with Richard Jones, Keith Warner and Christof Loy also gaining further experience as a director in her own right. In 2007 she won 2nd prize at the European Opera director’s Prize of Camerata Nuova for a staging concept of Rusalka.

Since 2008, she has worked as a freelance director based in Munich. Her first large scale projects were for Münchner Biennale and Malmö Opera. From 2008 till 2012, she lectured in stage performance at Musikhochschule Mainz, as well as producing students’ performances of Gianni Schicchi, The Magic Flute, Moritz Eggert’s chamber opera Wir sind daheim and Coscoletto by Offenbach.

Operahouses

She has been associate director at Oper Dortmund from 2011 until 2014 and continues to direct in Frankfurt and Kassel. Outside Germany her growing international reputation has brought projects from Folkopera Stockholm (Madame Butterfly), Göteborg Opera (Hans och Greta), Glyndebourne Festival (Ariadne auf Naxos), Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Un ballo in maschera) and Opéra National du Rhin, Strasbourg (La Clemenza di Tito).
