Opera i Lancaster

For many years we were known as the Lancaster Opera Workshop.  We then became the Lancaster Opera Company, and more recently, Opera Lancaster.  Over the years, we have presented more than 100 opera productions to the Lancaster community. We began producing operas for the public in 1952 and have done so every year since, at times staging them in the Fulton Opera House, and more recently in the Roschel Performing Arts Center at Franklin & Marshall College.

We incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1956 and received our tax exempt status in 1960. In 1965 we purchased the vacant firehouse at 411 W. King Street, and we continue to use that building as a permanent home for rehearsals, set building and storage, costume storage, and office.

We are a member-driven organization with most of our volunteers coming from our local educational, business, and arts communities.  Anyone who is interested in opera and supporting us can become a member. We provide development and career advancement opportunities for local, regional and national singers and musicians and we provide performance opportunities for local music professionals who are raising families here and want to maintain and hone their artistic skills without extensive travel. Two singers who had early opportunities with us, and went on to full-fledged international singing careers with the Metropolitan Opera and other companies, are John Darrenkamp (currently on our Artistic Director) and Robert Brubaker.

The general excellence of our productions, makes us one of the more unique companies in Pennsylvania with the exception of companies in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Consequently, recent auditions have attracted singers from the region and the nation.  Our principal cast members are compensated, as are our production staff. Our chorus and extras, are generally volunteers.

We recently re-designed our educational programming for school-age children and college students.  We recognize the significance of music in a well-rounded education, and especially the added dimension that music with acting provides. Like other performing arts organizations, we depend heavily on community support in the form of grants, sponsorships and donations to supplement our ticket sales.
