Nicolai Gedda studerade sång för Martin Öhman  och för sin adoptivfar donkosacken Michail Ustinov. Han gjorde sin debut och genombrott på Operan i april 1952 i titelrollen i Adolphe Adams Postiljonen från Longjumeau.Nicolai Gedda tenor 1925-2017

Gedda har gjort ett stort antal lyriska roller, och har uppmärksammats inom den klassiska franska repertoaren. Han har även nått framgångar som Mozartsångare, bland annat som Belmonte i Enleveringen ur Seraljen och Ferrando i Così fan tutte. Under 1960-talet började han även göra tyngre partier såsom Wagners Lohengrin (detta var dock det enda tillfälle i karriären han sjöng Wagner) och Berlioz Benvenuto Cellini.

Han har varit engagerad vid världens alla stora operahus, bland annat La Scala i Milano, Covent Garden i London, Metropolitan Opera  i New York och Opera National de Paris. På senare år gjorde han turnéer i Ryssland och möttes av enastående ovationer. Han behärskar sex språk mer eller mindre flytande. Vid sidan av engagemangen vid de olika operahusen har han ideellt sjungit i kyrkor över hela Sverige. Hans biografi (se nedan) har översatts till både engelska och tyska.

Han var aktiv så sent som 2001, då han sjöng Kejsarens roll Altoum i en inspelning av Puccinis Turandot för Chandos och 2003 då han medverkade som översteprästen vid en inspelning av Mozarts Idomeneo. Gedda anses av många, tillsammans med bl.a. Luciano Pavarotti och Plácido Domingo vara en av de tenorer i världen som spelat in mest skivor av alla inom sitt röstfack.

Gedda har oavsett produktionens storlek en unik bredd i sin repertoar där även ett otal operettinspelningar, främst för EMI, samt upptagningar med romanser ingår. Egenartat nog uppträdde Gedda under sin karriär (enligt memoarerna) endast i tre uppsättningar av traditionella operetter. Ett mycket omfattande och kanske mindre känt romansmaterial har inspelats i Sverige under senare delen av sångarens mycket långa karriär.

Hans far var donkosacken Michail Ustinov han tog sin mors svenska namn.Efter utbildning av fadern och Martin Öhman debuterade han 1952 på Operan i Stockholm som Chapelou i Postiljonen från Longjumeau. Redan 1953 sjöng han don Ottavio i Don Giovanni på La Scala och 1954 Hüon i Webers Oberon på Grand Opéra i Paris.

Vid festspelen i Aix-en-Provence väckte han uppmärksamhet i den klassiska franska repertoaren, och han gjorde även lycka som Mozartsångare vid festspelen i Salzburg där han sjöng Belmonte i Enleveringen ur seraljen och Ferrando i Così fan tutte. 1957 debuterade han på Metropolitan som Faust i Gounods Faust.

I mitten av 1960-talet började han sjunga tyngre partier, bl.a. Lohengrin i Stockholm och Berlioz Benvenuto Cellini i London. Han har sjungit ett stort antal huvudroller i det lyriska facket, och tack vare sina språkkunskaper har han kunnat tolka rolltexter med stor känslighet.

1977 utkom hans memoarer, “Gåvan är inte gratis”.
