Toledo operastad i Ohio
Toledo är en stad i Lucas County i den amerikanska delstaten Ohio. Den är belägen i ett område, som tidigare kallades The Great Black Swamp, som var hem för bl.a. stora mängder grodor. Staden brukar därför ibland kallas Frog Town.
Founded by a group of visionary community leaders in 1959, Toledo Opera opened its first season with Verdi’s monumental Aida in the 3,500 seat Paramount Theater in downtown Toledo. Since then, the Opera has performed in both the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater and the Stranahan Theater. In 1987, the company added education and outreach programs for the community. In October 1999, the Opera opened its fortieth anniversary season with performances in the newly renovated 900-seat Valentine Theatre. That venue has now become its home, with all of the company’s productions taking place there in the 2012-2013 season. In March 2011, Toledo Opera experienced a financial crisis that resulted in the cancellation of the final opera of the season. Operating since then under new leadership and a new maxim, Sound Vision, the company has emerged stronger than ever. Its season now and in the near future consists of three productions a year (one less than in previous years), each with two performances. With financial oversight policies and procedures now in place, the company is now balancing artistic vision with prudent fiscal management.
