English baritone Adrian Clarke made his Royal Opera debut in 1994 as Sid (La fanciulla del West) and has since sung with the Company many times, his roles including Le Dancaïre (Carmen), Donald (Billy Budd), Kostandis (The Greek Passion), Alcindoro (La bohème), One-Eyed Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten) and Baron Douphol (La traviata). For The Royal Ballet he has sung in Renard and The Seven Deadly Sins. In the 2015/16 Season he returns to sing Le Dancaïre and Mityukha (Boris Godunov) for The Royal Opera.
Clarke was born in Northampton and studied at the Royal College of Music and the London Opera Centre. He has sung for leading companies around the world, including Bregenz Festival, Landestheater Salzburg, Royal Danish Opera, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, La Fenice, Venice, Dutch National Opera, Teatr Wielki, Warsaw, Singapore Lyric Opera, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera.
Clarke has become particularly well known for his interpretations of contemporary repertory. He created the roles of the Librarian (Sophie’s Choice) and the Maharal (Golem) and sang in the premieres of The Merchant of Venice, I am Goya, Unsungen,Europera 3 and The Griffin’s Tale. He has also sung Deceit (The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit) for Channel 4 and the title role in Blond Eckbert for Muziektheater Transparant.
