Georg Tichy began his career as a singer in the Vienna Boys’ Choir. After completing his studies as a mechanical engineer, he returned to music as a vocal student at the Vienna Conservatory. This was followed by an engagement in 1973 at the Vienna State Opera. During the 1974–5 season he sang his first Silvio in I Pagliacci, and—after winning various international singing prizes—undertook the rôle of Papageno under Horst Stein in 1976.
