Karin Lovelius is a Swedish mezzo-soprano who received her formal training at Opera Studio 67 in Stockholm. She continued to take a Master’s degree in Opera at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Other important influences musically comes from Christa Ludwig, Anne Sofie von Otter, Mark Pinzow, Birgitta Svendén and Peter Lindroos. She was a winner in “Center for Contemporary Opera” and made her debut in the Weill recital Hall/Carnegie Hall in 2004.

Karin Lovelius still at the Sibelius Academy Karin sang the leading part in Thomas Adés opera Powder her face during the Musica Nova Festival in Helsinki. Other roles during this period include Dama in Macbeth with Savonlinna Opera, third lady in the Magic Flute at Ystadsoperan and Flora in Sir Jonathan Millers La Traviata with Opera Island. In 2006/2007 Karin sang Mouche in a performance about Heinrich Heine at Stockholm City Theatre, Norrköping and Uppsala Concert Halls a.o. In 2007 she made her debut at Stockholm Royal Opera as Flosshilde in Die Götterdämmerung and in Das Rheingold as well as Siegrune and Rossweisse in Die Walküre.

Stockholm Volksoper

In 2009 Karin Lovelius made her debut at Stockholms Volksoper as Mother in Menottis The Consul. The same year she sang Frugola in Il Tabarro at Opera på Skäret and in 2010 she sang Lucia in La Gazza Ladra at Läckö Slottsopera and did a recording of Daniel Börtz Goya for Gothenburg opera. Karin is currently a member of the ensemble at Oper Leipzig where her most recent roles include Klytämnestra in Peter Konwitschny’s production of Elektra, Die Amme in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Baba the Turk in The Rake’s Progress ( Damiano Michieletto).
Other roles include Fricka in Das Rheingold, Leokadja Begbick in Mahagonny, Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Mary in Der fliegende Holländer, Gertrud in Hänsel und Gretel, Klytämnestra in Iphigénie en Aulide, Annina in Der Rosenkavalier, Gamekeeper’s wife in The cunning little vixen, Grimgerde in Die Walküre and the alto part in Dessaus Deutsches Miserere.

Upcoming roles this season are  Fricka in Die Walküre. In 2016 Karin will sing her first Waltraute and first Norn in Götterdämmerung as well as Die Kartenaufschlägerin in Arabella.


Karin Lovelius is also sought after as a concert singer. With Münchner Rundfunk Orchester she sang Diepenbrock’s Lydische Nacht and she was the soloist in Gerd Kührs worldpremiere of Messe in 2013.She also sang the world premiere of Reine Jönsson’s Att Glänsa together with Malmö Symphony Orchestra in 2011. Karin has made several recording with the Swedish Classical Radio. During 2007 – 2010 she regularly performed El Amor Brujo with SAMI Sinfonietta and Gothenburg Wind Music a.o.

Karin Lovelius was the soloist of 2013 in Stockholm Cathedral’s regular Christmas concerts. Karin has worked with conductors like Ulf Schirmer, Anthony Bramall, Matthias Foremny, Marc Soustrot, Alejo Perez, Axel Kober, Susanna Mälkki, Tobias Ringborg and Gregor Bühl.
