Kristine Opolais - sopran

Kristine Opolais is one of the most sought after sopranos on the international scene today, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala and Royal Opera House Covent Garden. She is working with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Antonio Pappano, Daniel Harding, Louis Langrée, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, Marco Armiliato, Marc Minkowski, Fabio Luisi, Kirill Petrenko, Alain Altinoglu and Kazushi Ono.

In the 2015/16 season Opolais continues her notable collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera, returning for an anticipated new production of “Manon Lescaut” (Eyre) with Opolais starring in the title role alongside Jonas Kaufmann. Opolais has become synonymous as Manon Lescaut, following appearances in two previous new productions of the same title, at Royal Opera House (Kent), and at Bayerische Staatsoper (Neuenfels) in 2014. In Spring 2016 Opolais also appears as Cio-Cio San in “Madama Butterfly” at Metropolitan Opera, both titles this season broadcast to cinemas in HD. Opolais maintains a strong relationship with the Met, ever since her debut as Magda in “La Rondine” in 2013. Famously, in April 2014 Opolais made history at the Met, making two role debuts within 18 hours. She gave a renowned performance in “Madama Butterfly”, only to step in for a matinee of “La bohème” the next day, which was additionally cinema broadcast around the world. Opolais wowed audiences worldwide, the performance receiving huge impact and critical acclaim.

Opolais continues her association with the Bayerische Staatsoper, indeed in 2015/16 she makes two role debuts, firstly in Boito’s “Mefistofele” as Margherita and Helen of Troy and she also appears in the title role of Halévy “La Juive” as Rachel. This strong relationship with the house began in 2010 when Opolais made her debut, stepping in, to wide acclaim, as Rusalka. Since this time Opolais has appeared as “Madama Butterfly”, Amelia in “Simon Boccanegra”, Vitellia in “Clemenza di Tito” and as Tatjana in “Eugene Onegin”. Furthermore Opolais enjoys a noted collaboration with Royal Opera House, here she has particularly cemented her title, cited by The Telegraph, as “the leading Puccini Soprano of today” appearing as Cio-Cio San, Floria Tosca and Manon Lescaut. Opolais has also appeared at Opernhaus Zürich as Jenůfa and recently made her house debut at Opéra National de Paris, at the Bastille.

In recent seasons, Opolais’ concert performances have included appearances at Salzburg Festival, Tanglewood, BBC Proms, with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Stockholm Philharmonic and Filarmonica della Scala. Highlights of 2015/16 include Opolais’ debut performance with Concertgebouworkest under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, and concerts with the Boston Symphony on their prestigious main season European Tour including Opolais’ anticipated Musikverein debut.

DVD recordings include Deutsche Staatsoper’s Prokofiev’s “The Gambler”, in which Opolais sang the role of Polina under the baton of Daniel Barenboim, “Rusalka” from the Bayerische Staatsoper production, which received high critical praise, “Don Giovanni” in Aix en Provence in which Opolais sang Donna Elvira and “Eugene Onegin” at Palau de les Arts ‘Reina Sofia’ Valencia. A CD with WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln of Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” was released with Orfeo International, and nominated for a BBC Music Magazine Award, and her latest release is a recording of “Simon Boccanegra” with Wiener Symphoniker on the Decca label.
