Australian baritone Samuel Dale Johnson joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the start of the 2014/15 Season. In his first Season his roles included Dormont (La scala di seta, Meet the Young Artists Week), Silvano (Un ballo in maschera), Imperial Commissioner (Madama Butterfly), Baron Douphol (La traviata), Leuthold (Guillaume Tell) and in the Life Reimagined Gala. In the 2015/16 Season his roles include Wig Maker (Ariadne auf Naxos), Moralès (Carmen), Zalzal (L’Étoile) and Thésée (Oedipe).

Johnson was born in Nambour, Queensland, and studied at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. He was a recipient of the R.J. Hamer Opera Scholarship with the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust. Roles while at the Conservatorium included Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Gianni Schicchi, Pandolfe (Cendrillon), the title role in a staged production of Saul, John Styx (Orphée aux enfers), Taddeo and Silvio (Pagliacci), Peter Quince (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Peter (Hänsel und Gretel). Roles elsewhere have included Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) at the Brisbane Festival under Alex Ingram.

Concert performances include Adès’s Brahms with the London Symphony Orchestra and Adès, appearances with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and as a guest artist at a Puccini gala concert with Simon O’Neill. His awards include the Dr Francesco Castellano Operatic Italian Award, a Mostyn Hanger Opera Award for Saul and Gianni Schicchi and a Sunshine Coast Performance Scholarship.
